How about an insectoid race, that spends a good portion of their lives gathering wisdom and life experience, only to then undergo a metamorphosys that radically changes their appearance?

Perhaps they start off as creatures with a dull brown color and no defined gender, only to emerge as beautiful colorful and winged creatures after their transformation, and with a gender?

so they have a larval form that has not been done much in dnd and certainly not with a player useable goodfolk race.

Indeed. And it could also make playing any class very different. Perhaps after their transformation into their beautiful form, they also change in their abilities.
I was assuming more how their culture responds as larval offspring adds a lot of things you have to defend, I assume they metamorph at adulthood, and interesting fundamental necessity can make a culture different and that gives you more to roleplay with.

did you mean something else?

No, that is what I meant as well.

There are many ways in which a playable race that metamorphs can be interesting. Culturally, but also gameplay wise and roleplaying wise.

gameplay would be tricky, your suggestions?

also, do you mean something that ends up looking like this?

I think after their transformation they should look kind of like a beautiful butterfly. Large wings, lots of color.

Gameplay wise, they could gain new powers after their transformation. Flight would be one of them. Perhaps a stat increase as well?

to beautiful and I lose the looks badass game demographic, have to balance with the identification factor which tends to like human-ish qualities but go too far an I return to the well-worn rubber forehead which I want to avoid.

how would you suggest it work from a mechanics standpoint? what would the Laval form look like?

any suggestion for basic ways to make the standard prebuilt cultures work?
