Yes, and I let players use them.

OTOH, I think WotC's gone overboard with the number of Elven subraces.

The only one I know of WotC adding to the slew were Ghost Elves (which I thought were great, actually), but I never read any of the Eberon stuff, so I'm in no way sure what was there. Most were just carryovers from the 1E and 2E days.

No, eladrin is what several subraces have been rolled into.

High, Grey, Sun, Moon, and Zakharan already.. Qualinesti and Silvanesti if Dragonlance returns, Valley if Greyhawk returns, and Wildspace if they came up again. Very easily Ghost and Eldred as well. All Eladrin now.

Yeah, I use them and allow them, but only in some of my games. I kept subraces extremely minimal in some of my homebrews, but for most games I allow them. Haven't played them much myself, but I just haven't had much of a suitable chance in that regard. I'd like to though.

I use subraces in that they exist in the game world, but they are not (significantly) mechanically distinct. For example (in 3e), the wild elves in my game mighty well gain proficiency in weapons other than bows and swords, but they have the same +2 Dex/-2 Con and same low-light vision as any other elves.

I really dislike the "an elf for every class" thing that sometimes seems to be a feature of the game.

You forgot Star Elves. And we still don't know where Dark elves (drow with the curse lifted) are, though by lore they should be elves not eladrin
