I know You can fight on the defensive taking a -4 to all attack rolls in order to gain a +2 dodge bonus to AC.
Is there any mechanic to model casting on the defensive, other than to avoid taking the AoO? For example Tim the wizard casts defensively (insert mechanic here) and gains a +2 dodge bonus to AC.
I can see a concentration check of some kind involved. Say 15 + spell level and still provoking an AoO. And 20+ spell level to gain the AC bonus and not provoking an AoO.
I know this second part belongs in the house rules forum, but I'm mainly intersted if there is already an option like this out there.
