D&D 5E One or Two Fights a Day Encounter Design

Why? (Serious question--it's not intuitive to me.)
Because he's supposed to be tougher than the next guy.

Excluding magic of any kind, and assuming rampant abuse of Second Wind, the 5e fighter does 'heal' faster than other classes, too.

One thing I miss from 4E is proportional healing based on surges. A fighter should recover faster from injuries as a feature of the class.
Proportional healing just makes him not any slower to recover. And HD are proportional, sorta, if you roll all of 'em.

I believe second wind was added to the fighter based on the warlord. In hindsight, I would have preferred a separate warlord class. Or just remove second wind from classes all together and add it in the optional healing rules.

In reference to a fighter healing faster in general, it is based on a class specializing at being tougher, just like a barbarian can shrug of weapon blows. I find the later much harder to believe if we bring realism into the discussion, which always happens when you want to grant martial characters extraordinary ability and use real life analogies.
