One-Shots or Campaigns?

Campaigns! If it doesn't last 5 years, it's too short.

I've been in a "group" of campaigns in the same world that we switch back and forth that's been going on since the late 80's. The campaign I run started when 3.0 first came out (only books out were PH, DMG, and MM), and last year had a reset to 80 year later in the same world. Most of the others I've played in the past decade have lasted 2+ years, and could have still gone on except for real world issues.

Cheers,

Campaigns, with One-Shot interludes. Sometimes the one-shots take place in the same setting as the main campaign, often serving as exposition, or expanding on themes that the main game doesn't touch.

Other times, I'm just trying out new rules or a different game system under "control conditions", so it requires a one-shot. These can lead onto a full campaign if popular.

This would be a "yes" answer. We all set out for the campaign, and- many times- multiple DM's for the campaign... unfortunately, my group is kinda AD/HD about such matters and get bored with our characters, and want a change... so it ends up being a very short campaign, with no more than 5 or 6 missions before switching DMS ,and characters

I like to run short or mini-campaigns.
Which to me is a single group going from 1st to 15th (ish) in less than a year of real time.
It works for our group.
The other two DMs do this also for the most part.

Campaigns. One shots just don't excite me that much, I like to grow my character.

That said, since I've been tagged as the DM in my group, I did think twice about joining a one shot at the local Con last week...

Ok, this is odd, but we do a lot of one-shot campaigns.

Meaning, we're playing episodic campaigns. We don't role-play camping, healing, etc. We go from one end of the world to the other with the DM saying, "OK, the prince of Kush is so proud of you for taking out the Red Tower Wizard that he has put you on a boat, fully loaded, to the southern Black Kingdoms. There, you met the tribal lord, Mbasa who gave you directions to an ancient ruin..where much unguarded treasure surely awaits. You are at the front door...."

There's two reasons: a) it's Conan's world and thats how the stories are; b) we have month-long breaks between games.

The one-shot campaigns run for 15 or so sessions and then we start over.

Mostly, we play mini campaigns that go on until I burn out... then we start something new! However, that model's not workign right now - we're one third of the way through STAP, and everyone's having the time of their life (partly because most of us don't get a chance to play 8th level PCs too often). Of course, my players are used to shorter campaigns, so by this point, everyone's got a new character they'd like to try out.

Same characters all the way through (if they live)?

Campaigns mostly. One shots for game days, cons, and that once in a blue moon where we for some reason can't play the current campaign.
