My regular gaming group has scattered throughout the country, we are now hoping to start an online campaign via msn messenger. Our biggest dillema is finding a suitable system for depicting combat. Does anyone know of an online grid system that could support input from multiple users and function as a sort of map system?

And you can get screen monkey lite a free version, and your players can access thru their web browser.

OpenRPG has never steered me wrong.

OpenRPG, if you like a free utility with everything you'll ever need. ScreenMonkey from NBOS Software if you want something with a more slick interface (it's a commercial product after all).

Fantasy Grounds (I think ) is a professional online gaming software, which looks pretty neat (but isn't free unlike OpenRPG, for example).
