Actually, if you look at the Giant Octopus stats, it is truly wimpy compared to the OotS and their allies. I've always wondered why the Druid gets Giant Octopus and Dire Bear as choices at the same level.

Yep. It has only 47 HP and AC 18. If Lien is anywhere near OotS level she could rip that thing to pieces in two rounds with Durkon.

In my Eyros Halfling Pirates game, there's a Halfling Druid with a Porpoise mount. Could have had a Shark, but the Porpoise proved to be a solid choice

Porpoises are more intensive.

Actually, I wasn't referring specifically to OotS paladins, but paladins in general keeping their mounts in Pokeballs. I think that's where the confusion arose.

Heck, even at level 1, a mounted charge + Smite with what might be a lance that just looks harpoonlike is going to hurt the stupid Giant Octopus a lot.

As for the giant octopus...I suspect it's on there with the dire bear because of it's potential damage output (8 attacks per round, each doing respectable damage) and because it is a -grappling machine-.

Not as durable, though it's AC is one of the better ones as far as animals go, but giant octopi can do some serious, nutty damage.
