I don't know that "I accept your offer" to the imp would work - remember, it has to be the right 4 words to the right being at the right time for the wrong reasons. To me that seems to imply that there would be a right reason to say those words to an imp, which I find hard to believe (for a non-evil character).

Selling your soul in order to save your life from a revenge seeking dragon mama would be considered the wrong reason for a lot of non-evil characters... at least thats what Elan would say, and since we are talking about V the RIGHT reason to sell his soul would be in order to acquire new heights of magical prowess that his years of study and complete lack of trancing couldnt achieve on its own.

There doesn't have to be a right reason.

"Seems to imply" can lead you to a logic error if you therefore conclude there "must be" a good reason.

Suss out the logic here:

1 Accepting an imps offer is always for wrong reasons.

2 Vaarsuvius accepting an imp's offer at the right time leads to ultimate arcane power.

Therefore prophecy fulfilled consistent with prophet's statement.

I'm a card-carrying chaotic and there are still situations where much the same could be said about me. I see the border as having more to do with whether you follow rules for its own sake. Everyone (sane) will follow rules they see as clearly justified.

Or, alternately, the dragon would have sunk the fleet and hung around to sneer at the floundering ape-things. Plus, none of the back-up melee brigade has the damage out or range to stop the dragon from diving into the middle of them, munching on V, and flying away. I mean, this is a CR 19 baddie here (at least); the expected outcome here is about the same as when Roy singlehandedly challenged Xykon.

Plus, it's a black dragon. It could've gutted the fleet from below without ever breaking the surface, then picked off the survivors.

Didn't Discovery Channel do a 'documentary' where they looked into supposed ability of large creatures to fly? Hollow bones and lighter than air gas pockets (flaming breath) would all allow a 'dragon' to fly. Albeit also rendering everyone of them a potential Hindenburg during a thunderstorm.

Yeah... it was a pretty bad show, with terrible "science". If nature had wanted to make a huge, flying, fire-breathing lizard, there's a lot easier ways to do it than what that show was suggesting.
