In one of the early comics, Haley stated that he was a 1st edition Thief. So, it's backstab rules -- multiply damage instead of adding a bonus.

Was a 1e thief, probably a 3.5 rogue now (since in the first strip we saw everyone switch over to 3.5 as the world updated). . .but he could tell tales about the old days, a little like the Old Man Dirt Farmer who could tell tales from the OD&D days.
