Hey! I made the front page news! First time for that!
So today wasn't at all like I planned. I realized in a panic last night that since I won the qualifying round of the Risk 2210 tourney, I would have exactly zero time for the dealer room for the rest of the Con. So I bugged out of my 10 AM CoC game, with a tiny twinge of regret. I haven't played CoC yet, but I just wasn't excited about it. I spent the time wandering around the Dealer room, picking up stuff I needed.
I got a witty shirt and a few bumper stickers, a book of riddles from
Cloud Kingdoms, and the circular chess board by
Dream Green I played earlier. Also got a little math game for my 3 yr old. My wife went shopping as well, and bought some minis, some dice (5 sided, couple of 7 sideds, and a 100 sided, among others). She'll pick up some Reaper CAV models tomorrow. I got a few demos of quirky little games, including some that aren't out yet. Game Monkey (not to be confused with Code Monkey...) has a cool mechanic for their game, where initiative, success check, and damage are all done with the same roll of the dice. I thought it was very well done, and I'll be trying out the open beta test to see if its as cool as it seemed. I also played a little card game from
Diet Evil games called Nobody But Us Chickens, that was a lot of fun.
While I was shopping my wife was playing Reaper's CAV game. When I hooked back up with her, she was roped into a second CAV game that conflicted with the D&D we had scheduled so we could game together. We happily canceled the D&D and hung out. She played in the War Master Tournement for CAV, and I mostly watched. Her CAV are all painted pretty pastels (with flowers!), and that drives the hard core CAVers nuts.
After more shopping and looking in on many games, we followed the Reaper crew to the game hall for pizza. My wife lead the charge to hit the liqour store, and tons of the Reaper guys followed her. I stayed behind to play Attack! with the rest. It was a neat game, by
Eagle Games, but we played it all wrong. It looks to be vastly superior with the correct rules, and the guy that was reading the rules for the expansion set kept exclaiming "This is so cool!" so it seems the expansion is pretty good.
On the way back to the hotel I rode the elevator with John Kovalic (and he got my stalking laws joke), and Steve Jackson. I actually followed Steve off the elevator (ironically scant seconds after my stalking joke...) and thanked him for Melee, which was one of my childhood's favorite games. I neglected to tell him that I can produce all the relevant charts from memory at will.
I returned to my room to find Reaper folks all about. We chatted for a bit, and they finished their card game, then they all went to the bar. I have an 8 AM Risk game, so I stayed, wrote this report, and I'm off to bed. Tomorrow won't get any kind of report until we're home on Tuesday, so that's it from Origins for me!
