Osyluth, not Bone Devil

My vote for best looking bone devil EVAR is the Sam Wood illustration in the 3e and 3.5 MM. Great stuff.

Agreed. Both osyluth and pit fiend in that illustration are superb.

The new minis preview calls the Bone Devil the Osyluth. I'm guessing we are getting new (actually old) names for some devils. It also states they debated whether or not it was a demon or a devil in 4E, and decided on devil.

But isn't Osyluth the new (old(new)) name for them?

Back in 1e they were the Bone devil.

2e introduced non-descriptive names for devils and they became Osyluth

3.5e went back to the original Bone Devil (with osyluth in brackets).

So is 4e using the old name, the old new name, or the old, new, old name?

...I predate 2e, so the descriptive names always made most sense to me. I suppose that to many people who came along with 2e or 3.0e the abstract names are more familiar and thus better?

They were renamed to avoid confusing them with the monster known as the boned evil.

That doesnt necessarily mean that osyluths are no longer also called bone devils in 4e. Maybe they just wanted a new mini, and decided not to call it "Bone Devil Trooper" or whatever.

In one of the official adventures published for 3.X it's labeled "Osyluth", but the MM labels it like you said(Bone Devil[Osyluth]). I remember it took our DM quite a while to find out what the hell we were actually supposed to be fighting, because all the adventure said was "Osyluth", so he was looking for that.

Then it impaled one of our party members.

That's a pretty sad looking miniature. I'm pretty sure it's too late to get them to pull and redo it, but if not I hope they really give the image a serious rethink instead of going with the one we see in that image. Yuck.

The manticore mini looks almost exactly like the one from the design & development article the other day. Maybe a little more dynamic is the only difference.

I'd say that's what the re-imagined Osyluth looks like.

One problem with your theory. Look at the Upper Left corner of the stat card.

Yep, there it is: Lawful Evil.

Seems Ozzy here remains devil.
