[OT] A KNIGHT'S TALE: Um, what's up with that?

I liked it when i saw it at the movies, i liked when i bought it on DVD, i like now. It's just a fun movie with some cool medievel action and a good soundtrack, whats wrong with that?

I am always amazed at the large number of otherwise intelligent people who don't "get" this movie. The anachronistic elements were intentional -- on one level, they make the movie a satire of modern sports competitions. Most of the modern songs played were chosen because they are used in sports arenas to get the fans involved in the game.

This movie is a perfect example why films should not be judged by their trailers because the motion picture industry, for the most part, does a terrible job of making trailers to sell movies to audiences.

I never noticed the music in the movie (beside "We will rock you"). I thought the movie was great. Even better cause it was kinda a date movie and the GF loved it too.

Thumbs up.

Some people have a list of things that they expect to see in a medieval movie and if those check boxes aren't all filled in they slam the movie.

This movie was a fun, light-hearted attempt to present the material in a way that hadn't been done before. Some people don't get it.

I got it and loved it.

IMO, they wanted to convey the flair of a tournament to an audience that doesn´t readily answer to medieval notes. And using Queen´s "We will rock you" sure did convey a lot of how an audience must have felt back then, when the knights rode in with lances held high. :D Sometimes I wish my characters had that kind of musical support when they go off on adventure.

And that Chaucer portray...wonderful bard. Now imagine what that guy could have done with spells ;)
Exactly. Most of the audience of this film is, unfortunately, wholly ignorant of the period and had no idea as to what was going on contrary to what movies and television tell them, thus the soundtrack to draw them in. When I saw this movie on my home theater with a bunch of people, I found half the jokes flew over everyone's heads because I was the only one who knew who Chaucer was (to everyone else he was just another character, and one that kept making odd allusions, at that), let alone who had read the Cantebury Tales and thus caught all the references. This was a movie designed to draw interest from the general populace to the subject matter rather than being aimed at the educated minority, and I think it did it well.

Have I come to the right boards?

I'm sure these boards were slamming the film when it was doing the rounds in the theatres.

I with held judgement at the time since being in the UK it wasn't going to be out for a bit, having seen the film I liked it, and its weird style, sort of comparing medievl events with modern once by use of music and in some cases costume.

ahh the joys of friendship......

When this first came out, I remember that the local theatre had two films, one of which was not very decent. I had two friends that worked at the theatre and consequentially made friends with the other people that worked there.

getting to the point. Not only did i get to see this movie 1.5 million times. I also got to see it from the projection booth (interesting perspective), I got in free, i got free refreshments, and we got to play around with the fountain drinks (i can make some killer mixed sodas now).

The movie was great. I enjoyed it immensely. It had all the great elements.

2- hot chicks
1- heroic cool d00d
1- cool king
1,000,000,000- awesome fight scenes

As for her requiring that he lose to prove his love for her, comeon... that was awesome. It would be like a rich man's S/O asking for him to give up all his money for her. Its asking a man to be able to release what he wants more than anything for her. Great scripting if you ask me. I thought that chaucer was well written, but then again the way that I saw it, chaucer was telling the story.

Did anyone else notice that the story seems to start with more detail when he joins the film. I figured that the film meant to be that way to show that Chaucer had a first hand experience with the story after that. Also, his character seemed to have more "developement", perhaps because he knew himself best of the group.

I liked how the knight is the knight from canterbury, it fits the description well.

All in all a very good movie.

Incidentally, it also has precedent in Arthurian literature. During a sequence of joust scenes in Malory (I think, I'll have to check, part of me thinks it could be Chretien de Troyes and it could very well be both), Guenevere tells Lancelot to "do his worst" as a test of his love for her.

I'll see if I can find this somewhere. I'm at work and my books are at home, so it may not be all that easy.

Ya, interesting how all the people who judged the movie before ever seeing it don't have the balls to show up and explain
1) why they felt the need to do that and
2) how they could have been so wrong.
Remember, they declared unequivocably that the movie would be a horrendous pile of crap just from seeing the trailer, then en masse defended their right, nay duty to do so.

Just remember this lesson when you hear how movies suck from people on these boards who haven't seen it.

i kind of remember someone named DWARF leading the crusade against this movie. don't know if he's still here or not, but i think he was the most vocal detractor of this movie.
