[OT] America's Army

Right. I used to be an avid Counter-Strike-player and the one thing I learned from playing the game is- In a firefight it's impossible to stay alive. Yup. Completely impossible. I mean even the best CS-players around can (on a public server) get stats like 30-1. That is 30 kills and 1 death. Those who can score this are truly 1337. Now, this only tells me to avoid the army at all costs because if you end up in a fire fight you are dead as a dodo no matter how skilled you are.

One other thing is that fire fights are utterly unfair. I mean you run around ruling the battlefield with your Colt Car 15 and suddenly... *smack* ...some camper with an AWP got you in his sights and dead you are.

If this game is going to teach the youth anything it's: Don't enlist for it will kill you and there is nothing you can do about it.

Lets be honest: We all know it's not gonna encourage mass signup. It's just a publicity thing.

But the one thing this game SHOULD teach you is, in a firefight, don't get bloody shot. Keep your head down. Take advantage of cover. Never stand in the open. The best map in the game to demonstrate this is the map "Bridge".

It also teaches you that a good defense can hold off quite a bit of assult... I've often prevailed in the parajump assult map as defense with odds like 3 to 11.

And it's not Counter Strike either. Played both, this is (IMHO) far better.

The fact that they force you to "register" yourself in order to actually play made me run the other way :D

By "register" they mean "enlist" if your playing the game you've just signed as reserves for the war in Iraq.

I'm sure you are right Tsyr but you miss my point slightly. I haven't tried America's Army but I guess that the lethality rate is similar to that of CS. Perhaps I see things differently than most people but I realized, from playing CS that war kills. On the other hand I have had several friends join the Legion Ètranger so I guess that death doesn't scare everyone.

Have you seen his Syrian project? Pretty similar to America's Army. Apparantly the graphics of Under Ash has nothing on America's Army. (This is intended solely as information and is not up for debate.)

Couldnt find the review mentioned in slash.dot... whats the "official site"...

If they wanted to simulate the US army´s current Modus Operandi it should be using laser rangefinders and calling in Airpower to blast away the other team.

Seems boring for a Counterstrike style game thou.

I learned this lesson myself at about age, oh, Ten or so. I should hope EVERYONE learns this lesson.

However, I had a friend who loved nothing better than "playing soldier" in the national guard. By all accounts, he was a very good one, too. However, he quit about two years after coming back from Desert Storm. Either the drastic military cuts in finance and morale did it, or he didn't want to face another war. Or POSSIBLY, he was about to be promoted and wouldn't be a grunt anymore (to this day, I was never sure which it was.) His favorite thing was to shoot extrememely powerful firearms on a shooting range and just be an infantryman. Where he is now, I haven't a clue.

Probably the best advice I've seen, ever.

I haven't played the game (I am going to download it, however) but reading this thread is quite interesting.
I can see an excellent reason for the game, and one that is very important.
In a culture of "Reset Button", everyone is equal, and nobody ever gets hurt, this shows that people die, and sometimes, it doesn't matter how good you are.
You can survive a firefight in real life. A lot of it is luck, but skill is definately a determining factor.

Oh, and I seriously doubt that by registering the game, you have enlisted in anything. I wish people would realize that America learned it's lesson about conscription in the Vietnam Era. It doesn't work. Why would they want to bring in someone who has no interest in joining up, or was tricked into joining up, when they can recruit someone who wants to go in.

My two bucks... (Since two cents won't get you anything but laughed at)

Actualy, that happens when you send in your selective service card on your 18th birthday... which is both a law (Meaning its a crime to not do it) and its essential for being eligable for certain types of federal aid. Just an FYI. Not that we have an active draft anyhow. The game is just that; a game. You sign nothing more than a standard EULA when you play the game... I know, I checked the legaleese.

I'm not trying to discuss politics, but don't spread lies.

Didn't exactly miss your point so much as missed the focus of your point, if you follow. I assumed that most people above the age of 5 knew that war = deaths, didn't know a game taught you that.
