[OT] America's Army

I think the game is great! The only thing I would change is the pace of the game.

When you compare counter-strike to games like Quake Deathmatch, CS comes off as slow. Well, when you compare America's Army to CS, it makes CS seem like its on acid!

AA is a very slow game. But it can still be fun, so I recommend it.

I'm exaggerating to make the point. An adolescent might very well believe that skill can keep him from dying in a firefight. However, I suggest that skill won't save him. And that is something he might learn from playing America's Army or CS.

I agree that keeping our heads down might give us a few extra seconds but there is not much we can do to survive the bullet from an unseen sniper.

But then. You have played the game, Tsyr. Did you feel like enlisting after playing it? I'm also curious of what you would say to a friend who wanted to enlist after playing the game. I for one encouraged my friends to go. Of those, two returned after a year and without experiencing combat. The third (and the first to go) is still there and has had a lot of combat experience. If my younger brother today suggested that he was about to enlist in the Legion Ètranger (a very accomplised CS-player) I would discourage him.

(Sweden uses conscripts and I, my friends and my brothers have all done military service.)

I don't feel like enlisting to start with. Not that good at dealing with the... environment... of military life.

As for weapons... uh... I don't even know the proper designations, though that's what they use... M-16, same with underbarrel grenade launcher, sniper rifle, SAW, anti-tank rifle, frag, smoke, and flashbang grenades.

Well, yeah, but I like it slow like that.

Yes, you might spend half your time cowering behind a flipped trick, leaning out only briefly to take potshots at the enemies doing the same a long ways away, occasionaly sprinting or crawing forward to the next car. But that's half the thrill... knowing that even a single screw up or stray bullet ends it.

I played the game; it was very well done, but I found it rather dull in the long run. The problem for me is that I have a limited amount of time to game, and while I love FPS I like to be in the action (I'm very aggressive in Soldier of Fortune 2 MP, where I usually rack up a 40/25 kills/deaths ratio in a 30 minute game). In America's Army, you die and you're dead; you have to wait until the round is finished until you can play again (which can be anywhere from 5-8 minutes). Given my aggressive tendencies I'd sometimes die in the first minute of the round; even though I wasn't stupid enough to rush right blindly in across open terrain, there are a limited number of maps (I think I unlocked 5-6 in my first day of playing; there are more if you pass the advanced training courses) and most defenders know the entry routes well enough to catch an aggressive attacker with a grenade 90% of the time. Or in the open terrain maps, it's very easy to be picked off by a sniper even if you're crawling carefully forward from cover to cover. Sure, the same thing happens in SoF2, but at least you can come back in and get revenge... :D

That said, for those who prefer realism and actual squad-combat tactics, I'd say give it a try. If nothing else you'll definitely get your money's worth ;).

because if you end up in a fire fight you are dead as a dodo no matter how skilled you are.

Yadda yadda, what are you talking about? The world is not counter-strike, and counter-strike is not the world, DUH!

Your logical step of understanding that when someone that doesn't like you, has a gun and shoots you, you die is not some major revelation. However, if no one fights back and risks death then the person with the gun rules the world (Note: Edited out unnecessarily rude remark. And just in case you're wondering: No, the smiley at the end of the post didn't make it any better. - Darkness)

I believe the army game was designed to create a better team entity in FPS games to illustrate the value of team and squad based tactics in battle (which is what saves your hide). Case in point that person with 30-1 scores is probably a good player, but a lousy team mate. Especially if the other people on his team hae much worse scores.

So you are right, when you fight alone in a war you will die. When you fight as a team, you will die less. But really what the hell else do you have to do? Are you curing cancer? I didn't think so. Enlist!

I LOVE IT!

I've been playing AAO since it was first made available and I love it!

Why?

It isn't just a normal FPS game, it is more like a military sim. Teamwork is paramount. Comparing CS to AAO is like comparing checkers and chess.

Everything is made to be ultra-realistic. Weapon reloading animations, weapon jams, crawling around in the dirt, the awesome sound of bullets wizzing by your head etc.

Actually, the sound effects are one of the best parts of the game. Its very immersive. In Counter Strike, somebody shoots at you, you don't really care unless you are hit. In AAO, you have the sounds of bullets whipping past you, concrete exploding from bullet impact, and tracers flying over your head. It scares the crap out of you. You get that feeling of desperation and of being "pinned down" that no other game can offer.

It also makes cover fire effective. The enemy is less likely to charge when someone is empting a SAW above their heads.

As far as the death thing goes, for one, there is no blood in the game. Only little pink bursts when you are hit. Nothing like Soldier of Fortune.

War kills people? Well duh! This game will not discourage anyone from joining. Go watch Saving Private Ryan, Blackhawk Down, or We Were Soldiers. Now THAT will discourage you. And trust me, nobody joins the military without having seen at least one of these.

Overall, a GREAT GAME! I highly recommend it if you are into serious war games.
