OTOH, jumping to the conclusion that terrorist violence in Indonesia, a region wracked by Muslim violence, has been perpetrated by Muslims isn't much of a jump.

A point. But several other forms of violence have taken place recently as well, that could just as easily have sponsored this attack. Not only the Christian response to the mentioned attacks (which was admittedly much more disorganized, and had a much smaller following... what else can you expect in the worlds largest Muslim country?), but more pertinently, the recent conflicts between the military and the police.

The prevailing views held by the local expat community lay in two directions;

1. that this attack is a continuation of the September 11th attacks initiated by the local fundamentalist groups aided perhaps by outside forces.
2. that the attack is a continuation of the militaries efforts to gain influence and power. By disrupting tourism they justify a move for power in an attempt to bring stabilization to the country.

Not so long ago a police station was attacked by a large force of soldiers, and a full out battle resulted. The military were attempting to rescue a drug smuggler under their control, who the police had arrested in flagrant disregard of military territory. A few low level soldiers were clapped on the wrist and thrown out of the military for this attack. Then a grenade went off in the police headquarters here in the capital. Bombs are just a few more steps up from the time-honored practice of hiring unorganized riots from a couple hundred dollars, a popular pastime among the Indonesian elite.

So, one more suspect for the roster, take it or leave it. The truth is that unless Indonesia allows in outside help for investigative work, we’ll never know for sure.

I swear that Indonesia has given me the materiel for a hundred D&D campaigns. I would know how to run a corrupt nation in my sleep now. When I manage to get regular games going again, this will no doubt come in use. Life experience is funny that way.

It seems that there is a growing tide of fanaticism in many countries. For myself, I believe that if I demand rights for myself I must respect the rights of others. My rights end where yours begin.

May the people who lost loved ones be comforted in this dark time.

Up until this time, I always thought that Australia was quite isolated from the whole "War"on Terror. At least geographically. Of course, our PM is undeniably Bush's lap dog. Anyway, this fanatism can also be seen in the US. Just look at Shrubby's rhetoric...Sept 11 was just what he needed to increase funding to military industry and try to stake a claim for America in the Middle East. I hope John Howard realises the folly of George W. and refuses to send troops if there is conflict. :(

Sorry if this post is disjointed, I'm very tired and quite upset.

So you are blaming this terrorist strike on America? Well, it won't help you, because the people who did this don't care if you like America or not.

Sigh. Please close this thread, Mr. Moderator.

My prayers for the dead, my good wishes and sympathy for the living, and my hope for the world.

Guess that's it then. We now return to D&D and all things gaming.

Please do not close this thread. Existance stated he was upset, as are many of us (I only found out today I had a cousin who was injured in the blast). Let me offer a clarification to Existance's post: Many Australians fear that we will become a target for terrorism due to our support of the United States. The attack on Bali, due to the fact that many Australians were involved, has reinforced that state of mind in some of us. Please excuse the poster and keep the thread open and civil :)

Yep keep strong political comments out...

As usual I get breaking news from this FORUM ! D&D CNN for me... :) Same with the 9-11 thing... I was reading the forum and was informed this way. One more reason not to close the thread... turning my TV on now...

I feel sorry for the Aussies who have been made victim by this attack. Being portuguese speakers like us, East Timor has received a lot of help and sympathy from us Brazilians. Australia´s support for their independence was clearly a good thing and I hope this doesnt change that.

I hope all board members are fine... my condolences to the Australians. I also hope Bali tourism wont suffer too much from this. Dont like seeing peoples livelihood destroyed.

I some ways it is that aspect that you mention, Rashak Mani, that I find most terrible about this act. The people of Bali that I've met while on vacation wre polite, in the way only true Indonesians can be, and unlike the capital city I live in now, Bali radiated a feeling of intense optimism from time to time.

Now, of course, that feeling will dind a difficult hold as tourists slip away and Bali (hopefully, yes, hopefully) becomes yet another might-have-been Indonesian paradise.
