[OT] Ben Stein and Evercrack

Not really. I think what it does is show us something about Ben Stein. His son needed more than to just have his computer taken from him. His son would have just spent all his time at his friends or done something similar to get around the problem.

What his son needed was a father who could spend time with him. Ben though didnt have time to be a Dad, so instead he shipped his son off to a school that could watch his son 24/7 and keep him off the game because Ben was too busy or not interested enough to put that much effort into his son himself.

You hit the nail on the head there. Sometimes the truth sounds harsh, good, but harsh.

but some sort of political mastermind? I don't think so.

Nixon's loss to Kennedy was simular to Gore's loss to Bush. (Popular vote vs. Electoral vote). Many, many people predicted that he could not make a come back like he did. Nixon ran a very good campaign the second time around and Stein did have something to do with it.

[This point is brought up to explain a historical point, and not a debate on Gore vs. Bush]

When you discuss some one you can't just remove parts of thier lives and ignore them. That would be like discussing George Washingto the president and ignoring his carrer as a General in the Contental Army.

Be that as it may, Ben Stein still works as a consultant for politicians. Take it for what it is worth, but any politican of any stripe is suspect to me and that goes double for thier advisors.

After reading all 80-some-odd posts here, I have to say that:

Unless any participants to this thread have anything constructive to add, the pseudo-political wrangling, and the insults on Ben Stein's personal life is close to getting this thread closed.

Sorry, but personal insults and politics are both not allowed.

Personally, I'm appalled at the sensationalism the reporter tries to ascribe to this story. Asking once is one thing, but intentionally leading the interview like that is highly unprofessional.

Well it all depends on what you think the reporting industry sells. news or advertising? :)

and on that brilliant note... i feel sorry for ben stein. like almost every other parent at one time or another he's faced with a emotional/moral/discipline issue and he has only his personal abilites to rely on when attempting to maneuver/guide/manipulate another human being into doing what is better for that human being in the long run.

thats why parentings hard, and they all have my respect in that regard.. even if wrong or unsuccesful.

I totally agree. Did the interviewer somehow think Stein would say "why yes, I literally mean the game is demonic, that an actual demon inhabits the game and possessed my son."? The interviewer was as bad as some parodies I've seen of sensationalistic "journalists."

A bit strange that the father makes it sound like the kid was somehow forced to game, that he didn't like gaming. But anyways, why didn't they just rather get rid of the inet connection. Instead they got rid of the son. ;) Good parenting.

This is exactly what I was thinking as I read this. Ben maybe a pretty funny (and smart) guy in some areas but I feel this shows a serious lack of basic parenting skills.

Well it was on 48 Hours ;) They gotta do something to grab them ratings y'know! :D I doubt anything any reporter does could 'appall' me anymore. The constant sensationalism and 'spin doctoring' if you will has pretty much tainted all TV news reporting (with the possible exceptions of The Leher Report and the Daily Show ;) )
