Thresher:

You know, Green Eggs and Ham was written on a bet. One of Suess' friends bet him that he couldn't write a children's book using no more than 50 different words.

Suess took the bet and produced one of the greatest works in child literature. :)

Seriously, go and look; that book is made of 50 different words. Absolutely incredible.

Er... what?!? Link please!

published in a book entitled "the secret art of dr. seuss" available from bookstores everywhere and many web retailers.

it has nudes in standard seussian landscapes and an impressive overview of his fantastic sculptures.

for many of the sculptures he molded plaster seussian heads and added real horns form various african animals to them, making some odd creations indeed :)

high school video projects were the best!!

[thread hijack] HAHA. When I was in the 9th grade, and NON-gangsta rap was all the rage, my friends and I made a rap video based upon The Odyessy of Homer for English class. We used a giant stuffed monkey I won at a faire for a cyclops. We dressed my poor then 9 year old brother in a toga and made him battle said cyclops. Oh my gawd...it was terrible...

Then my 10th grade year, we made a stop motion documentary on the feudal system starring He-Man dolls, GI Joes, and other assorted action figures.

I concur. High school video projects are the best :) [/thread hijack]

As for Dr. Suess... I think he was just brilliant. It's really hard for any one author to last as long as he has and continue to captivate young minds. If he was on something, which I don't think he was (but who knows), I don't really care. If you ever get to Universal Studios Orlando, walk through Suess Landing and go on the Cat in the Hat ride :) Now that's freaky...

And see Suessical the Musical. Good stuff, that.

Look up a book by either Seuss or Geisel (his real last name) called "The seven lady godivas"; I recently saw the A&E biography on old Ted Geisel - he was quite a randy gent, when he wanted to be... He published this book when a publisher friend told him he'd "publish anything he wrote"... This book, which sold terribly, was Geisel testing his friend! :D

EDIT - I should be clearer on this, after having done a little more research into TSLG's. This was an "adult" book, but not some of his more randy work; his most interesting stuff was circulated among friends and NEVER published, according to the Biography I saw. He also used his cartoons to make fun of some of the high society women who used to frequent parties he was dragged to.

I highly recommend anyone interested to look for the re-airing of that biography - though not in December - because it was quite informative about a man whose books shaped a large portion of my life, and probably many of yours, too.
