[OT] Favorite Band?

Hey!

I'll list five (and wait for the inevitable poster who will list a hundred-odd bands to prove how broad his or her musical tastes are).

These are in order.

5. Ministry/Revolting Cocks/rest of that incestuous Chicago industrial cabal

Hey Teflon Billy, I just like you more and more each day!

Being a proud Canadian, were you into Skinny Puppy as well? Some of my favourite music memories of the late 80s / early 90s are the Ministry & Skinny Puppy concerts, especially the Ministry tour just before Lollapalooza II (where they broke huge) in a mid-size club where most of RevCo was there and Nivek Ogre joined them on stage for a sped-up version of Smothered Hope.

Ahhh, the memories... :)

Have to agree with Bowie...

At GenCon, watching American TV in the hotel room (that's funny, 'cause 95% of the TV we have in Canada originates in the US, but this was a show we don't get often!), I saw Carson Daly interviewing David Bowie.

Bowie was asked about American radio, and he said (paraphrased):

His favourite American band was the Pixies. The problem with American radio was that they never played them, and the band broke up and went away. Here is band that inspired so many others - including large movements in music by the likes of Nirvana - and they never had success on American radio. This was a band that everyone in the music industry knew, and most of the bands that would become prominent "alternative" artists were fans of, but they never got the support from radio that they deserved.

And now it's happening again. (According to Bowie) the two most important bands in American music today are The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. The Lips have had a small amount of radio play, but nothing compared to what they deserve. And Mercury Rev, despite their albums making it to the "Most Important Record of the Year" for every single release in the UK still haven't found much in the way of success in their homeland. And it would be sad to see these two very important bands, who will shape the music of the future, break up and go away like the Pixies did...

- Anyway, I thought it was kinda cool, 'cause I really like the Pixes. But, more than that, I love LOVE the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.

So, after all of that pre-amble (can you tell that I don't get to post nearly as much as I'd like and it all comes spilling out in one moment?), here's my current list:

Currently, I'm loving The Strokes. It's fun driving music.

Best of All-Time: Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips, and I have to admit that I'm a huge fan of The Wedding Present.

Grew up with: The Fall, The Cure, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, the entire Industrial scene of the 80s and early 90s, Pavement (the good stuff), etc. etc.

Are you forgetting Liquid Tension Experiment or just you don't like them?

It's not that I don't like them, though I do prefer bands that employ a vocalist to at least break up the 'mindless noodling' into managable sections. So, in a sense, I prefer Explorer's Club to LTE just as I would prefer Gong over Ozric Tentacles, even though I like all four bands.

In no particular order (it depends on my mood): Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Suzanne Vega, Sade, Enya, Frank Zappa, Jocelyn Pook, Loreena McKennitt, State of Grace, Deep Forest, Weird Al Yankovic, the Beatles, the Cars, Tom Petty, Adam Ant. Kind of a variety there, I guess.

I love threads like this.

In no particular order, stuff I can't live without:

Michael Penn (see da sig)
Johnny Cash
Pixies
Aimee Mann
Lucinda Williams
Ani Difranco (Dilate era, recent stuff is slipping, IMHO)
Mazzy Star (so silkily, sexy smooth)
Lou Reed (V. Underground and solo stuff)

Edit: How could I forgot Sugar & Tom Petty??!!!!

Well, I live in Vancouver, and while my hometown has produced a disproportinate number of members of the Chicago Industrial scene (Vancouver is responsible for Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Numb, Will plus members of Ministry, RevCo, ), the Vancouver scene is so very dead that the aforemtntioned bands don't really play here all that much.

Most of the members of the aforementioned projects are (or were) part of the nightclub-warehouse-party scene here, and are generally pretty cool.

You imply here that FLA is _not_ Canadian the way I read it. :)

let me instead refer to skinny puppy as FLAs brethren

we all know FLA and skiny puppy are both canadien to the core. they even use the word 'aye' in pretty much every song. ;)
