[OT] First World War PC game...?

Verdigris

First Post
I was wondering if anyone out there knew of a strategic-level First World War game. Freeware would be nice, of course, but any game will do. I am unable to find any on the web.

It may be that game designers have eschewed trench warfare to the more mobile WWII strategies, but in reading about WWI I am struck by the strategic complexity of it -- especially on the grand scale.

I must admit my first thought on this one would be, "Dear God, how massively depressing!" I mean between the Somme and Ypres you have thousands upon thousands of men dying on a daily basis to shift the trench lines up to, say, a mile. :(

My grandfather was a veteran of WWI -- from his stories, I don't think I could handle such a game, much less the reality. And after reading All's Quiet on the Western Front I think I'd opt out entirely

"Do you want to be the machine gunner that dies in a trench, the brigade commander that dies from a mustard gas attack, or the cavalier who gets run over by a tank?"

Most WWI games that I have seen are at the divisional/corps level - things like Operational Art of War - and given what you are describing, this should fit your bill - while not shareware, it should be pretty cheap (i.e. less than $5)

Most paper based games focus on a specific battle - I think there is on on the first battle of the Somme - but can not remember its name.

Imagine a first person shooter
option 1 over the top
option 2 variations of the above with gas mud snow etc.

Ugh it would be to depressing for me

There was a first person shooter recently set in an alternate timeline where WWI never ended. Not what youre looking for but its the only Great War PC/video game I can think of.

I recommend checking out www.wargamer.com good site for all military strategy games board and computer. Im sure somebody on the forums there would have some info.

I think you're thinking about Iron Storm. It's not quite WWI (it's 1964, WWI never having ended), but it's the closest one I can think of as well.
