Jason X - this movie is a great action/comedy!

T1 & T2 - Great hardcore action movies, especially with T3 coming up.

for something completely different

Before Sunrise (Richard Linklatter film. Talky, romantic, but one of my favorites)

Almost Famous
Ferris Bueler's(sp) Day Off
Igby Goes Down (just watched this this week and liked it a lot. A little depressing).
High Noon (Gary Cooper western).

Seven Samurai is a must....
For sheer schlock entertainment, I think Screamers is an appropriate choice.
Let's see... How about some silent cinema? Nosferatu is an excellent start, with Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the Cabinet of Caligari to round things out.
On the topic of Fritz Lang, I would also encourage people to see "M." A excellent piece of Noir with great allegorical value.

Quirky, life-affirming fun...
Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Local Hero.

Quirky, death-affirming fun...
Trainspotting, Wild Zero {might be hard to find. Its Japan's best rock and roll schlock zombie movie}.

Old-school...
My two favorite films, Casablanca and Mr. Roberts, The Maltese Falcon, Some Like it Hot {Men dressed as woman+snappy dialogue+Marylin Monroe=great}.

Rent yourself some REALLY bad 50's sci fi and horror and MST3K the heck out of em...

That can be even more rewarding than watching an actual good movie...

some films I'd recommend

Ran - by Akira Kurasawa (my personal fav of all his films, including the seven samurai)
Rashomon (very intersting Kurasawa film, many consider it his best, I've only recently seen it)
Le Femme Nikita (1000x better than the american remake titled 'Point of no return')
The Killer - directed by John Woo, the movie described itself as having 10,000 bullets and BOY were they not kidding!
Hardboiled (another great John Woo film)
Return of the Living Dead (very funny movie!)
The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly (classic western cinema)
The Wild Bunch (Sam Peckinpah at his best)
Chinatown (great neo-noir film by Roman Polanski)
Blue Velvet - very quirky, very strange, and very good David Lynch film
Angel Heart another excellent neo-noir film
Spirited Away this last years Oscar winner for Best Animated film. It deserves all the praise it gets, outstanding movie!
Apocalypse Now and/or Apocalypse Now Redux one of the greatest war movies ever made. I'd say its probably Francis Ford Coppola's best film out of all the movies he's done.
Mean Streets an early example of why Martin Scorsesse is considered one of todays greatest directors.
Young Frakenstein and Blazing Saddles Mel Brooks two greatest films. Some people thing YF is the best, others say BS is the best, eitherway, both should be among the top 10 greatest comedies ever made.

Thats all I could think of for now...

I must agree. The cinematography alone makes for one of the most impressive films I've seen. Please note, though, that while the pace is a notch above 2001, it is NOT an action film. Some scenes are intensely visceral , but they are spine-chilling rather than butt-kicking. I could go into how the pacing is paritally a reflection of the flow of the river and vice versa, and all the other things that can be read into from this film, but I would not wish to dilute the experience.

On the other hand, you might hate it.

old cowboy movies...

Rooster Cogburn. (old John Wayne)
The Cowboys, I think that is the title. Bunch of young boys and John Wayne in it. He dies and they get revenge.
Barbaroosa. Wille Nelson and Gary Busey(sp?) Good movies I think. Good characters to mine for my games.
