The best advice I can give on New Year's Resolutions is to emphasize things that you want to add or improve on for yourself. Don't take anything negative on (and losing weight is negative) just now. Resolutions to add exercise or physical activity are better, just don't do it concentrating on weight loss as the final goal.
Save that for Lent. For Lent every year one of my best friends gives up pop and eating between meals. And given that most westerners are conditioned to look on that time of year as one of enduring hardship (whether as Christians or by osmosis), you have community support.
