I appreciated the humorous social/political commentary of the strips. One of my faves was when they were out hunting for the liberal democrats:
"Gun Control! Gun Control!"
*BLAM*
"OW!! Socialized Medicine! Socialized Medecine!"
Also I recall some sort of orbital mind control ray, aka: The Meese Piece.
Classic.
Yes. One-of-a-kind. And the thirteen-letter word Ed Meese (in the comic, at least) said was responsible for all sorts of bad things: "Snugglebunnies." And the puppy dog alien who terrorized the Earth and shot folks with lasers and kidnapped stewardesses having charisma and therefore surviving Congressional hearings (aka Ollie North). Or, when Oliver learned about apartheid in South Africa, asking his father, "Does Jesse Jackson know about this?"
And, of course, the bizarre story arc to which the last led.
Doonesbury and The Boondocks do this well, but not this well (though since Aaron McGruder was inspired to strip, er, draw a comic strip, by Bloom County, he would likely agree). It's kinda sad that Breathed quit while he was ahead, but it's better that than something like the last 15 years of Peanuts.
