It was pretty close between Soloman Kane and Bran Mak Morn, but I went with SK. My brother is a big fan of Howard's work and told me to read them. Reading SK on a cliched dark and stormy night alone in a creaky old house was an experience. So here you go, Turlogh, a female REH reader.

Definately SOLOMON KANE

He got me into creating a 16th Century setting in which Cromwell had survived and invaded France, the Grand Inquisitor had been made Pope, Fae had returned to Scotland, the Netherlands was the last bastion of legal magery, Ottoman Turkey was home to Gargoyles and all of Eastern Europe was ruled by Vampires and Lycanthorpes.

Conan (of course)

Francis Xavier Gordon I liked too

The Pict (forgot his name now)

and the Ku:):):):)e (what a silly filter)

If you want to know more about RE Howard you might want to check out the motion picture The Whole Wide World. It features Vincent D'Onofrio (Pvt Pyle, Full Metal Jacket) and Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones, Diary of ...).

She is a teacher and aspiring writer who meets with the established pulp-writer Howard and they fall in love. Then everything goes to hell. Quite nice, imho.

i've not read howard yet...so i'm influenced by the movie.

CONAN

i plan on reading conan and solomon kane based on the recommendations of the people on these boards.

Ahh Conan..

One of my favorite characters, give me the original RE Howard Stories, the Fritz Lieber stuff and a bare handfull of the new stuff and you have got hours of fun.

What is good in life?

Conan!

Liked Soloman Kane too. Most of Howard's writings featured the sullen-eyed Cimmerian so its hard to think about the other characters he created.

What about Red Sonya?

Wow my post lives!:D And I didn't even have to bump it myself.

As to Red Sonya, she only had one story and most people confuse her with Marvel's Red Sonja as I mentioned above.

Conan seems to be in the lead by a healthy margin, to be expected I suppose. But I need more votes just to be sure:p

Actually, Conan doesn't really make up even close to the majority of Howard's work. He wrote tons of stuff for the pulps of the time - Westerns, detective stories, boxing fiction, etc. It's just that the Conan stories happened to be his best, most memorable work, and the stuff with which he himself identified most closely.
