[OT] Russia Anything!

How about writing about Peter the Great and his revisions of Russia? He was an effective but very strange leader, I find it fascinating to read about him.

He also made a very big impact on European history by winning the battle against the Swedes in Poltava; if it werent for that (we had a dumbass king at that moment :( ), it is possible that Sweden would consist of Balticum, Finland and modern Sweden today (possibly Denmark too).

Ding! Yes, I'd be interested in reading about how Russian history was influenced by the potato. (I'd also like to read that piece on the bean and Western history, which I must now go hunt down.)

I think you could do a lot worse that take jgbrowing'ssuggestion, and offer the prof something he hasn't already read a dozen times over.

Fortunately the subject isn't Irish history then! :)

Do something about why one should never attack Russia in the winter. See if you can tie in something about Trotsky getting it in the back of the head with an ice pick.

Another good one to do would be an analysis of how well their science research programs have kept up with the west while their overall level of development seems to be chronically lagging.

I expect his prof sees that topic covered by everyone who does WWII/Stalin papers. I think the only real way someone could pull that one off without seeming repetitive is to try to debunk it. Perhaps writing a paper arguing that all of those failed winter invasions were due more to arrogance/bad planning/etc than the indominable Russian winter would be sufficiently different.

Mighty old, but I just wanted to say that I decided to do my paper on Vodka and it's history & influence on Russia, going from the 14th-15th century to the modern day. Fascinating statistics, really. And it must have not been too bad, since I got a B+.

If you're interested in the subject, try these books:

  • Russia Goes Dry by Stephen White
  • The Alcoholic Empire by Patricia Herlihy

Hmmm. I suppose he probably doesn't want another Romanovs / Rasputin paper either, no?

Actually, given the current state of affairs in the Russian Orthodox churchthe move to canonize Rasputan, and Ivan the terrible is a great story.....
