OT: SARS - Should we be worried?

Honestly, I'll worry when the disease is in more than 40 geographical locations and the CDC/WHO containment teams are scrambled...

Yup, when that happens I'm just gonna sit around singing "Eve of Destruction" a la The Stand.

And so the dormant beast finally awakens. ;)

The eastern world, it is explodin'
Voilence flaring, bullets loadin'.
You're old enought to kill, but not for votin'.
You don't believe in war, well what's that gun you're totin'?

But you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend...
You don't believe we're on the Eve of Destruction.

:) Good song.

You mean you're going to kill yourself? :D

Oh no. He's a SAINT compared to some of the people that we've met. I think that I can imagine some of the people that he's talking about.

SARS mutation #5: Vector: Schlager.

Nah, you should just start reading King's 'Night Surf' over and over :) 'Just The Flu'.

Not worried here, no. If they start saying things like '40% morality rate' instead of '4%', then I'll become worried. Othewise, I'll treat it like any other media non-event.

WHO -- SARS epidemiology to date

Of course, if it gets to Captain Trips-like epidemic stages, I'll go with the attitude of Glenn from "The Stand"(if it starts hitting animals as well, at least): "Sadly, the plague took most of the dogs along with their idiot masters. Most unfair."

2. Don't lick the table at the resturaunt and fast food joint.

Heh, I actually did something similar to that last week at a local Mexican restaurant. A big bowl of cheese dip spilled all over the table, so me and a friend grabbed some chips and started scooping it up. You have to understand, it was very good cheese dip. As in: "Best. Cheesedip. Evar":D

As far as SARS is concerned, I'm not worried. If I have flu-like symptoms, I'll go get it checked out, but that's probably the extent of alteration I'll make to my life. Past years, any time I've gotten sick at all (including the flu), I haven't been to the doctor; SARS, though, I realize could actually pose a threat, so I'll be a little more cautious.

I'm probably at more risk of catching Eastern Equine Encephalitis (West Nile Virus) than I am of catching SARS. This area's mosquito population is quite substantial. Luckilly, our horse has already gotten his vaccination, so there'll be at least one survivor at our house! :)

SARS has possibly mutated already. Possibly more than once. This could be a problem.

Yes, but it also can (and speaking in terms of probability - likely it does) mean absolutely nothing. Mutation in general is not in and of itself a threat. Mutation of very specific parts of it's code would be troublesome, but that's only a small number of the possible mutations.

If the virus mutates such that anti-viral treatments or our immune system don't recognize it, that's a problem. Ohterwise, mutation is probably meaningless.

How can the WHO decide anything by committee? It's only Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey left, right? :D

I don't have much to say about it (I just wanted to get in on the conversation before it got klunked so I could get some attention from the rubberneckers) other than to say that the panic it's causing may actually end up killing it as people overreact.

I hope.
