[OT, sorry, but I'm out of options] Help with Windows Media Player

Tsyr

Explorer
Recently (As in, out of the blue) a problem has developed with Windows Media Player on my system. It randomly refused to play certain files, and gives me an error.

The error is a standard windows error message, blaming the problem on a file called MSISAM11.DLL.

I have no idea what this file does, if it's supposed to be there or not, or what. I've tried reinstalling windows media player, this does not seem to fix the problem.

It doesn't seem to be a missing codec or anything... I'm still able to play everything using The Playa (the free player that comes with the DivX codec), so I'm fairly certain that isn't the problem.

Besides, it's not limited to any specific type of file.

Sometimes it's videos, sometimes it's just playlists for videos, sometimes it gives me the error halfway through a file...

Sometimes it doesn't even give the error.

But it's never consistant.

Gaaaaaaah.

Piratecat, Morrus, gang... I'm terribly sorry for an OT thread, but Microsoft is sterotypicly unhelpful (I've had a form letter from them for over a week now, but no human reponse with any help), and the Ranger's Glade, the only other message board I visit, was stumped.

Boot disk? Oh yes, one of those things people with a working A: drive have :)

My A drive hasn't worked in over a year now.

And anyways, as for reinstalling windows...

Not untill the fat lady sings. I _JUST_ reinstalled the sucker a couple weeks ago, I'm _STILL_ reinstalling stuff.

fdisk

Just kidding :)

Go to www.altavista.com and type MSISAM11.DLL and click search.

There are several FAQ sheets in the results. I didn't go read them. But hopefully they will help you.

Whenever you get a weird problem like this, almost always, someone else has already had it and found the answer. Just go find it on the web. Everything is on the web. Just go search for it.
