[OT] Spider Man origin modernizations - effective?

And as for the Gwen Stacy/Mary Jane thing.

How long has it been since Gwen died? Do modern comic readers under the age of 25 to 30 even know who she was?

Ultimate Spiderman.

I will most likely NOT see the Spider-man movie as it will not jive with my own view of Spider-man - among these things is the exclusion of Gwen Stacey, who's death at the hands of the Green Goblin is arguable as formative an event in Peter's life as the death of his Uncle Ben. I would have paid anything to have seen the scene of his pulling her up to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge by his web only to find her neck was broken by the jerk of him catching her.

A dark turn like that in the movie would have been right up Sam Raimi's alley - and then they could have saved Mary Jane for the sequel we all know will come.

Oh that and the Green Goblin looks cheezy and the effects do not seem to blend well with live action from what I have seen in trailer and commercials.

I think you're going to miss a great comic adaption, which is too bad. This film captured the essence of Spiderman so well, I was astounded. Killing the female lead would have delivered the wrong message in context of the film. Instead of showing how Peter had made the right decision, it would have shown him that being a hero was futile...which is exactly opposite of what Spiderman is about, IMHO. "With great power comes great responsibility" is delivered very well through this film.

Having Peter choose to NOT admit his love to MJ illustrates his willingness to sacrifice for the greater good, and that he has chosen that path, not that it's been predetermined for him. A large part of the film deals with Peter 'coming of age' and 'choosing the kind of man he's going to be'.

The goblin actually worked much better than I thought it would (love those pumpkin bombs). The cgi didn't work every time, but sometimes it worked wonders. And the actor playing J. Jonah...well, he owns the part forever, IMHO.

I really hope they DON'T do Venom. I hate Venom and Rampage, who were just ways to cash in on the 'dark' flavor of comics in the early 90s, and not terribly interesting to me. Doctor Octopus, on the other hand....now that could be big time fun, especially with the cgi to do the harness. The Lizard's some fun, too. Truthfully, Spidey has so many good villians, I'm hoping that Raimi chooses well. And we all know that poor Harry's fragile little psyche is due to crash when he finds out the two biggest secrets of the past, his dad's and his best friend and their secret lives. :)

Will the vast majority of teh audience that watches The Two Towers next December know who Eowyn is? No.

But the movie will show them. . . And they will come to like the character despite her proud ways (if the part is played well)

How is Gwen so different?

The audience would have learned about her just like the majority of them learned about Mary Jane in watching this film because the majority of the audience doesn't know either way.
