[OT, Star Wars] Empire Is Good.

Well, I'm probably gonna get blasted for this, but I liked the article.

Not that I completely agree with it, but it does bring up some interesting points. To me, it's not the kind of thing you can say "He's wrong....I'm right". It's more like "It depends on how you look at it"

Reminds me of the movie "Clerks", when they discuss private space contractors with cushy "government jobs" on the Death Star getting blown up by left-wing rebels.

Taking politics completely out of it (as we should) and refrain from calling the guy names....ok....now look at what he is saying and ponder if one *could* potentially see it that way. I think one could.

Like I said, I don't 100% agree with him, but he made some excellent points.

Ok...I'll brace for impact now....flame away

edit: I clarified the Clerks reference

I agree with you mojo.

Thing can always be justified... views can always be changed... most normal soldiers in a war just shoot each other to defend their lives...

Darth Vader could easily be seen as Pacifier... the Roman Empire's Pax Romana was built on the ruins of hundreds of small villages. Darth therefore wears black because he was defeated... otherwise he would be portrayed as clad in white probably.

"History is written by the victorious" - Admiral Yamamoto

The similarities, in the article, to a modern country are very disconcerting thou .... indiscriminate killing and so forth to get rebels...

In defense of the blasting of Alderaan...

{Johnathan Swift wasn't a troll, he was a satirist... OK, so maybe some trolls should be considered satirists, but only the very best of 'em. The rest should probably be lifted away in the night by the governement's legion of black helicopters.}

OK, While the author never directly invoked the current War on Terror, it was certainly there. How many Americans shed a tear for the Afghani civilians that were killed during Operation Enduring Freedom {and mind you, I'm not suggesting anyone really should. War produces dead innocents}. And how many people thought firebombing Vietnamese villages suspected of harboring VC was acceptable? So Vader destroyed Alderaan, its a question of scale. How many tens of thousands of inhabited systems make up the Republic/Empire? Is a single planet much more than a village? More a relative few civilian casualties.

And on the subject of torturing Leia, weren't we publicly {well, in the news media anyway} discussing the use of state-administered torture on captured Al-Qaeda leaders. Done safely outside our borders, to make it morally, I mean legally, acceptable.

I doubt article was intended solely to make one view the Star Wars movies in a different light. I have to think the intent was to change the way Star Wars fans see the nightly news.

To paraphrase Neil Young:

"The Empire and the damage done
Little part of it in everyone
Every Republics like a setting sun" -- or two.

Greetings!

Ahhh...yes...the Rebellion. It would seem that the Rebellion, though couching itself in the trappings of the oppressed, and loudly proclaiming itself to be innocent, good and righteous, is in reality the vanguard of anarchy, handringing, and the endless search for consensus in preference to actually doing something about the problems that face the Republic. It is to stave off this insidious anarchy that the Empire is necessary. It is the Galactic Empire that will establish law and order among the stars. It is only a strong empire, led by strong leaders such as Lord Vader, that can insure the discipline and leadership needed for the security and progress of civilization.

The Rebellion is an idealistic fraud. The Rebellion needs to be crushed by the might of the Empire.:)

Semper Fidelis,

SHARK

Well, it is obvious that force users should rule lesser beings for their own benefit, Jedi were foolish not to take control over the corrupted Republic! Yet The Sith knew that true power and Wisdom lie beyong Good and Evil, how unfortunate that Lord Vader betrayed The New Order!

OK it's a joke folks

The article is a joke folks. He is using arguements that people have used to defend facist regimes.
What scares me is that some may take him seriously and say, "Yeah, the article kinda makes sense."
It's a joke. The empire is clearly evil. The creator of the world has told us this. In fact one of the major reasons ANH was so fresh in 1977 is that at that time people had a hard time distinguishing good from evil, right from wrong. In films up til then these concepts were ambiguos (sp?). Star wars made it simply. The Villian wore black, nothing but black from head to toe. He was evil--- period. Now some of us may envy the efficiencies of dictatorship-- Mussolini made the trains run on time--none of us, I hope, would desire one. Churchill put it a lot better than I ever could:
"The only thing worse than democracy is its alternatives."
