[OT, Star Wars] Empire Is Good.

Useless point. It is bad vs. good, and bad is the empire and the other guys are good. End of story. This guy, among others, is reading far too much into something that Lucas has not thought much about himself!

However, the bad guys have much better music. . . .but don't they always?

MythandLore - whoa! You called it first!

Life of Brian. Empire substituted for Romans.

Yep... Mel Brooks' History of Galaxy Part I would have feature a flashy song and dance number featuring Chancellor Palatine singing, "It's the Clone Wars! What a show! It's the Clone Wars! Here we go!" While various corrupt politicians and provided the chorus and dance line in the back ground, and Jedi get broken by assorted torture devices.

And you couldn't leave out clone trooper synchronized swimming bit either.

The Old Republic had turned corrupt, so much so that it had ceased to be a democracy. Anarchy is how I would describe the political situation.

The Empire was never a democracy to begin with. It created a more orderly regime, at the expense of personal freedoms.

I don't think that either was presented as a model of good government. The Old Republic just got replaced by something that was at least as bad.

If Star Wars makes any political statement at all, it's probably "If it's broken, fix it. If it's still broken, keep fixing it."

I think I've posted this link before, but why not again. Scott Rogers is a great guy, but also a notorious troll. You can trust me on this, I know all about trolls. ;)

Wow, that's beautiful... :)

I've always wondered about Vader's ambiguous position; how despite his 'dark hat' allegiance he appears to be the one who effectively trashes his own Empire in ANH & ROTJ - at last all is clear!

"I know there's good in you, father..."

The first thing I thought of when I read that article was that Alderan, while probably a hotbed of rebel sentiment, didn't exactly deserve to be destroyed. The Death Star, OTOH, HAD to be destroyed or the rebellion was (literally) dead.

The second thing I thought was: another "A Modest Proposal" wannabe. I never really thought of Johnathan Swift as a troll, but looking back at it that was exactly what he was.

With all this hubbub over the merits of the Empire, I have to wonder how many people remember that Lucas absolutely loves to take real world philosophies and events and use them as a template for his Star Wars ideas (good example - the Jedi as the Shaolin Monks of the Republic, including their structure (training away from relatives from a very early age), teachings (separation of wordly attachments), and use (as a pseudo official peacekeeping force)).

So what historical event does Palpatines rise to power mirror?

Try post World War I Germany, and a political figure who - through playing on the fears of the representatives government and the populace - rose to the position of Chancellor, and then proceeded to get himself named "temporary" dictator.

Any bets on whether or not the Republic has it's own "Night of the Long Blasters?"

I remember reading that Lucas denied any connection between the empire and Interwar/WWII Germany. Of course this was in the late eighties and my memory could have gotten fuzzy.

After all it is VERY difficult to overlook the similarities between Empire Officers dress and Wermacht dress.........
