It was something like, the true power of the ring is not the invisibility. That's more of an effect when lesser creatures wear it. Sauron can control all things in the ring, as it answers completely to it's master.

The One Ring gives to its wearer power equal to his stature. The Invisibility was just a nifty side-effect for those who didn't know the Ring's true power. Someone like Gandalf, Aragorn, or Saruman could have worn the ring without going invisible since they could likely command it. Of course, in time the Ring would corrupt that person and twist his actions and mind to evil. Only Sauron would have complete and utter dominion over the ring, seeing as how he made it and into it he poured the lions share of his power. For all intents and purpouses, Sauron and the Ring are of one mind and purpouse.
