[OT] What is the most "wasted" money spent on a gaming item.

Several years ago I bought a copy of the original AD&D Deities & Demigods book (the one with the Cthulhu Mythos in it) for $120.

I don't regret buying it, but what is sad is that I had bought a copy for $12 when the book was brand new in 1980, but I idiotically sold it for a few bucks in the late 80s. :(

The Earthdawn CS and Bestiary. Not knocking Earthdawn, it's got its coolness factor, but I've never had a chance to use it and probably never will (to be honest, even though I acknowledge it's elements of goodness, it just isn't my cup of tea.). 'Course I've never used several of the boxed sets I got (Dark Sun and Tales of the Lance come to mind), but at least I was more into reading them.

As for products that I didn't buy myself, but relatives wasted money on as presents for me: Elminster's Ecologies, one volume of the Encyclopedia Magica and the deck of wizard spells (not that that wasn't useful, but before I got much use out of it, my friend left it in his basement to end up floating around when it got flooded  ). Again, not really knocking these products, I've just had no luck finding a use for them.

Nice book. I really like it. I really like Shadowrun.

Unfortunately, my wife just doesn't "get" cyberpunk
I feel your pain. I don't think we'll ever play SR again unless it comes out for the d20 system =/

Warhammer 40k stuff - you know how much it costs. The sad bit is that I actually like the game, but unfortunately either I or my friends never, ever, have time to play.

The 'Dune' book at the 2000 Gen Con.
I like Dune but no one will ever play it. But it is a nice item to have in my collection.
Also a set of solid pewter dice.

Hey, on the plus side, I've looked at SR and thought it'd be pretty darn easy to convert to d20. If anyone I gamed with had even the most remote inclination, I'd probably do it.

Especially since, back in the day, I was told SR was my forte as a GM.

The FRCS and matching Dieties and Demigods for FR. I have never played an FR game. No one in my group has ever played an FR game. I don't even remember buying them, though it was on one of my $500+ trips to the gaming store, before they stopped supporting RPGs.

I can't even tell you why I bought them, but it's been over a year and I still haven't even opened them.
