[OT] Who are YOU and what do you DO?

Hi all, i'm a ridiculously intense (1) person who loves D&D, but not as much as he loves music, the wife and trying to unlock the ancient texts of the, um, ancients . . . or something . . .

I was born in Newfoundland (take that, mainlanders!), and obviously the scars from having been born on an island in the middle of the north atlantic ocean in the middle of winter have never fully healed. But I did pick up the regional feat "Endure Elements: Poorly manufactured alcohol".

Grew up in England, Kenya, India, other parts of Canada, and this really far off place, i don't know if anyone has heard of it, they are real shy there, they called their nation the United States of America.

Played alot of music and sports in highschool at the expense of my education, until i sustained a head injury during a playoff rugby match. (missed the next game, but i was good to go for the city finals, but we lost that by an obvious act of god (and evil god at that!)) Then I proceeded to drop out of university twice, until I felt compelled to get my Masters in Psychology in addition to my BSc. in Biology. Then I spent a year working in a recording studio, DJing in clubs and raves, and producing a few good songs, which were later bought by Sony Internation's people in germany. I'm still waiting for my royalties, btw.

After that I jumped at the chance to do the medical school thing (something i wanted to get out of the way before i got onto bigger and better things, like paying taxes for the next 40 years). Currently i'm doing a year of medschool in India before i head back to north america (either chicago, ottawa or kansas city (yippee)) to finish my MD.

Along the way in my life i had the stupid 'hollywood/bollywood' style falling in love in europe by chance sequence of my life back in the late 90's. The poor girl who doesn't game is much more interested in modeling and fashion shows -- but i will someday turn her to the dark side of popularity!

No kids, which i good, because well, kids are expensive now-a-days.

My dad is basically a psion and has transfered some of his talents to me, and that plus my studying of ancient sanskrit will one day help me unlock my latent abilities. (old hindu texts are quite, well, boring....)

I am a practising Hindu Brahmin and plan on conquoring a south american village and setting up my own cult of enworld some day. I'm only 24, so i think i have enough time to figure things out along the way.

(1) -- first time i met the girl who'd later be my sister in law i scared her with my intensity, she thought i was really upset at her, i was just asking 'what?' . . . communication isn't a strong point for me, i guess.

Well.. I'm a lurker, but I might as well post anyways! I'm 17 and getting ready for the big senior year of high school. I live in northern virginia, where I write fiction for the school magazine, work bussing tables at a Red Robin, and play D&D for 10+ hours weekly (online!).

I'm a 29 year old white male, finishing the last year of my PhD in Neuroscience at University of Missouri, Columbia. I came here with the intention of going into research (specifically CNS repair with stem cells), but after seeing the current research atmosphere have decided against it and opted for teaching. During the school year, I teach 2 sections of Physiology, and I love it. I also have a good lead on a job at my alma mater as a prof when I get done here. I don't look like the normal science geek (though I am)- I'm 6'2", 250 lbs, long dark blonde hair, and look more like a pro wrestler. :p

I started gaming when I was 10, and have been gaming continuously ever since. Favorite games include D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Kult, WHFRP, Battletech, Deadlands, and GURPS. I have been DMing the same D&D campaign for 13 years now with the same characters, although we only get to game about once a month any more. I'm also a minis slut and don't know when to stop buying, especially anything by Reaper.

I also like jogging, weightlifting, golf, baseball, camping, dogs, sci-fi and horror movies (especially cheesy old zombie movies), books on folklore and the paranormal (although I can't stand most modern fantasy novels), and I'm an amateur ghost hunter. I enjoy classical music and metal (whether from the 80's or today). Like Rel, I am an extremely lucky man- I am almost always happy and content, and enjoy every day. I have a wonderful family who I know would do anything for me, and with whom I have never had arguements. I tend to have a goofy sense of humor, which I also utilize in my classes by throwing a Nerf brain at my students to answer questions. Hmm, what else? Never been married, only had one girlfriend (I'm picky I guess), still holding out hope for someday.:) Thats pretty much it- the life of a science geek!

34, married for 7 years with 2 boys (4 and 2). Currently employed by a government contractor, flying around to military bases to train the new web-based travel system. Because I travel so often, I had to drop from the home game and I am playing RPGA exclusively now.

My degree is in Anthropology and I even worked on my Master's for a while in Forensic Anthropology. Fascinating field, but I bailed out. I have held a canonball shaped lump of flesh that used to be all the soft tissue of an adult man. Had to get the bones because his skeleton was donated to our collection.

Computers are less exciting, but pay more and more jobs are available.

Gaming since the light blue book came out with a huge break in the middle. Came back full force with 3e.

Buncha youngsters. Bah humbug. I'm so close to forty, we'll call me 40. So far only Buttercup is ahead of me, but since she far outstrips me in both grace and dignity, I can only hope to achieve some sort of miniscule moral victory by aiming for "most crotchety."

Ludo ergo sum. And been doing as far back as I can clearly recall. I even remember waiting with breathless anticipation for the hardback AD&D players handbook to finally come out.

My paternity lawyer has advised me to say I have no children.

I've enjoyed far too many career paths to list them all, but I fondly include rodeo clown, radio announcer and ranch hand among them. Currently I do manual labor for a really really big company unloading trucks. I am the settling that occurs during shipping and handling. This job which I've held for five years gives me the benefits of working overnights to avoid the hated rays of the sun which bespeckles and burns my overly pale skin; plenty of free mental time to work on gaming and philosphical ideas; and a chance to be in pretty decent shape for an old fat guy. I also sweat like a starving pig looking at a ham sandwich in the summer from the exertion and heat. The downside is I know far more than is probably good about chafing.

My superpowers include a one-inch punch that can flatten an inflated truck tire and reflexes like cheetos. :D

Ok... why not... well, as long as I am exposing myself in this confessional manner I may as well plug everything I am into...

28 y/o male, graduated from Penn State. Now I am an Architectural Engineer working for RTKL (www.rtkl.com), 4th largest Architectural & Engineering firm on the planet, doing design work on a variety of projects. Also I am a drummer in a band called The Liberation (www.theliberation.org) that plays around DC and elsewhere, including NYC. Practiced martial arts for about 8 years now and play league volleyball - I'm only 6'0", so don't get the false impression I am good at it. Oh, and I volunteer at the National Building Museum as a docent (aka tour guide).

I played OD&D since my sisters both bought the coveted Red Box (one of my sisters still games), and have played ever since I can remember. I finally made the switch to AD&D 1E to incorporate it into a long-standing campaign, followed by a reluctant transition to 2E when in college. Now that I am a 'settled down' home owning fool I have gotten back into it by learning 3E pretty thoroughly, and will be getting 3.5 sometime after the honeymoon.

My favorite color is clear and I like to think about breathing in my spare time.

Im a big fan of modern architecture and some of the projects by your firm are fantastic. Im sure you are familiar with OMA's work, primarily the project for the University of Utrecht, the Educatorium? This shot off your site: http://www.rtkl.com/portfolio.asp?s=Workplace&St=5 reminds me very much of the repository in Koolhaas' Educatorium.

Have you any suggestions for someone who is interested in graphic / layout design and wants to better his work and perhaps find work or internships in the field?

Cheers,

I took a writing class once and the instructor said that whenever someone asks, "What do you do?" my answer should be "I'm a writer." So, there ya go.

My job that pays the bills is in the media planning department of a major advertising agency here in Los Angeles; we figure out things like "target markets" and "advertising cost per person reached". It's actually more creative than it sounds. I've been doing it for around 10 years right out of college.

I'm married and try to drag my wife to gaming sessions with me. She's pretty good natured about it but it's not really her thing. One of my co-workers and her husband also game with us.

I think it's hard to try to sum up one's personality just by listing a bunch of things in different categories, so I'll avoid that, although I will say that I despise reality television with a passion.

I've been playing D&D on and off since junior high in the early-1980s and am currently working on my first commissioned d20 work (just got the official offer yesterday!).

Let us see...
I'm 33 years old, married (2 years) and living a block north of 8mile in Detroit. Born in Bay City Michigan, went to Western Michigan until I got distracted and needed to find a job. Worked at a multitude of Auto suppliers until recently when I lost my job as a Quality Assurance Engineer due to the cyclic downturn of automotive sales. Just got my first unemployment check...

Seriously thinking about going back to school and become a Math teacher. Kids are not a problem - the rest of my family are all teachers, I've sub'ed during the last 'cyclic downturn' and loved it...

Have been playing D&D in whatever form since 1979. Not currently in a real life gaming group but I am a proud member of the Mines of Silverton Play by post group.

Other hobbies; biking, watching movies, reading comic books, chasing my scottie dog around the house and traveling...
