[OT] Why are so many Americans "overweight"

Kidnappings? You got me there, we don't have any of those. I saw it in Proof of Life, though.... :p
Not just kidnappings. Lightning kidnappings. They pick you up when you're at the ATM, and pull you into a van. Then they drive you around to all the other ATMs until your account is empty.

here's a good one. i noticed while reading morrus's announcement about america and gencon in general, that he observed how meals in NY restuarants are so big. i'll concur with that. it's the same here in chicago, most restuarants serve meals that are heaped up onto a big plate. and i, being one that doesn't think food should go to waste, will eat it all unless i'm rather full. which probably partly accounts for why i, and many other americans, have a big round midsection. :)

I don't buy this whole "Americans are fat because the portions are larger!" argument. IMHO it's vice versa. The portions are bigger because fat people like to eat more. The portions wouldn't be as large as they are, if there wasn't demand for them. Larger people make that demand.

It's a self-contained process; bigger people want bigger meals, which make for even bigger people.

Or in the mighty words of Fat Bastard: I'm fat cause I eat. I eat cause I'm fat. It's a viscious cycle.... I farted.

same over here... wish i could add a few pounds to my 140 (6'1). Eat a lot, excersise a lot, sleep a lot (student :D ), no gains.... (makes it difficult to go inside for the hoop :( ) NEway... enough whining from my part, it could be a lot worse.

And... i don't agree with mr forsaken with one of his laterst post but... i should keep it not more OT then it is already :D

Or in the mighty words of Fat Bastard:

Oeeeeeeee English Colonel tellin' me to lose weight!
Well listen SONNY!
I ATE A BABY!!!!!!!!

:D

And we don't all have to agree, discussions are about making eachother understand eachothers views and not about winning and I'm thrilled to see that it's happening in such civilised manner without flaming here and there (if it would have I'd have picked up my next level as one of HONG's PrC's from his site. Those are sooooo cool! One as Board/Post Flamer PrC haha hylarious =] )

Fors out =]

Forsaken... back to the Dutch thing... heard that in a survey with European Women, the Women voted the men of Holland as having the highest marks for Sexual Satisfaction. True ?

What about Dutch women ? How are they ? ;) Does this liberal culture extend to other areas beyond drugs and politics ?

I used to want to gain weight. In HS- i was 6 ft- 125 lbs (or to you metrics out there- that's about 1.9 meters, 55 kilos) I was bone thin. but four years of college has been good to me- or I have been good to myself. I gained like 10-15 pounds a year. By the time I graduated, I was 185.

Now I try to get thin again. It seems I could get away with a lot more eating unhealthily than when I am "avergae" weight.

Plus- when I was thin- i could do a lot more. Like in HS, I could touch the rim. For the longest time, i wasn't able to- until I started to eat right and exercising again. I dropped about ten pounds and eating right and now I can touch the rim again. what is better- I have a lot moe meat to build on than in HS- so I can theoretically jump higher than i did back then- if only I get into shape...

No offense, this thread made me think of it.

That gig had me screaming! Absolutely hilarious!

One of the Danish newspapers just posted some stats today froma a new survey that measured the amount of people who had a BMI of more than 30 (given that normal range is considered 20-25 for men, 19-25 for men and everything above 27 is considered a "danger zone" - this is quite a lot). The survey only covers 14 Western nations, and mentions that England and Germany are fast catching up with the US as the fattest Western nation. At the bottom of the statistic is France - followed by Denmark and Sweden. Denmark has seen an alarming raise from 150,000 people with a BMI of 30 in 1997 to 400,000 this year!
According to the study, a BMI of 30+ increases the risk of heart diseases by 50%.

On a related note - being somewhat of a nutrition fanatic myself - portions DO matter - A LOT! Most people still eat 3 large meals a day when 6 smaller meals spread out between 3 hours periods during the day is much, much healthier and a much more efficient way of energy consumption (especially if you're active).
And cut out the "fat" in food - it's for arctic animals and birds who need to survive the winter :p . No wonder, low-fat products have torn into the market big-time in this country.... ;)
