I could keep going on, but the idea generally holds. 5e isn't the best game in any given aspect; I would argue that there are other, better TTRPGs out there for many uses (and I'd even say that in terms of pure "D&D" some people might prefer other editions, or even clones). But when it comes to disparate groups of people getting together and finding that sweet spot of play, I am envious of the way that 5e always seems to be good enough for a critical mass of people to play.
That's all VERY on point, but I think there needs to be some agreement within the group too, because some things are mutually exclusive. If I don't do Theatre of the Mind combat, and Derek doesn't do grid combat, we can't have fun together. We can still enjoy the same edition, but we have to be on different tables to do so.

No, the lowest common denominator is Little Cesar's or White Castle.
The LCD usually refers to the least quality option that everyone involved will accept rather than whatis the worse overall. I'm of the opinion that D&D isn't the Cheesecake Factory of gaming it's Ruth Chris Steakhouse. People pick D&D because they like D&D. For many gamers, the majority I'd wager, D&D is their first choice not their second.

But the analogy wasn't D&D beesus other RPGs, it was 5E versus other D&D. Still, you are right, it would be a lot of people's first choice. But so would Cheesecake Factory.
