It's also my opinion that I could have saved a lot of time by saying "this is my opinion" once at the beginning of the post and having it apply globally, but I guess that doesn't work anymore.

I understand that what you stated was your opinion. My point is this:

You are entitled to say that you don't like their music. However, to say the are not skilled or not talented is incorrect. They are, in fact, very skilled at what they do. Take Steve Vai, I think his music sucks, but I cannot deny he is a very skilled guitarist.

Perhaps we're focusing on different skills. The ability to evoke emotional responses (other than nausea) with your music is a skill. I know plenty of musicians who may be less technically proficient guitarists than what's-his-name from DMB, but who can make a guitar weep, sing, or dance an Irish jig, all without losing track of the song they're playing. And then there are true Masters who can do that AND are incredibly technically "skilled." They, unfortunately, are a dying breed.

In my mind, the guitarist and drummer of DMB have committed the ultimate sin in music. Everything they produce is eminently forgettable. At the end of every song, I can't remember anything about it except for that guy's INCREDIBLY ANNOYING voice. Whether they know what they're doing with an instrument in their hands or not is irrelevant, because they're not doing anything memorable with it.

We are going in circles here. What is stated above is your opinion and that is fine. I am simply saying that you cannot deny that they are skilled. Are you saying technical skill is subjective?

skill Pronunciation Key (skl)
n.
1. Proficiency, facility, or dexterity that is acquired or developed through training or experience. See Synonyms at ability.

2. An art, trade, or technique, particularly one requiring use of the hands or body.
3. A developed talent or ability: writing skills.

No but belief in technical skill is subjective.

Since the critera of said skill can and will be judged differantly from person to person. So you can bring up as many Webster's definitions that you would like, Canis, Myself and many others will not agree with you.

And before this breaks down to "rubber/glue" arguements, please understand that your not likely to get any kind of convertion from me or anyone else on this. Such is the nature on taste.

This is not about conversion. This is just debate. You and Canis are the ones who have introduced more venom into this argument than I. I have said this many times, you are entitled to your opinion. However, technical skill, in many areas, can me measured. There are skill levels in music. It is only subjective to the uninformed.

Do you play an instrument?

FYI: Tim Reynolds is only a guest guitarist for DMB. He also is a fabulous musician. If you like him, you should check out:

FYI: Tim reynolds is the lead guitarist for Dave matthews, or was, they just didn't tell anybody
