That is what I said. What you think is good music is subjective. However, a person's ability to play notes, scales, chords and arpeggios, etc can be measured and is a skill.

But is no more interesting than the skill of rubbing two sticks together to make fire unless used in an interesting way.

Personally, I don't find their way of using notes, scales, chords, etc, particularly interesting. That's all I ever said, albeit I said it with hyperbole. If there was venom in there, it was unintentional.

As for the guitarist question, I didn't know they had more than one guitarist, and, honestly, I don't think I'd notice if Clapton was playing with them. I've developed a survival skill whereby I can instantly change the radio station when bands that irk me come on. It saves me from aneurisms, as I take music pretty seriously.

We can agree to disagree. No hard feelings, eh Canis? By the way, I know you hate DMB. But check this out. Tim Reynolds used to play with them up until 1999 and is a great guitarist. He has played with lots of bands and been doing solo work for over 30 years. He plays guitar, bass, drums and sitar. You might like him. His style is COMPLETELY different than Dave Matthews. When he does play with DMB, he plays lead and is a brilliant solo artist. Check him out at the site below. He has live shows you can download for free.

Maybe I should listen to them again, after all, I was young at the time. However, metal is not my cup of tea either

Well they are a death metal band so if you don't like metal you probably won't like them. To each his own, I'm just trying to spread the word.

Wow, funny thread. To those of you saying music is subjective, you are correct. For those of you saying music can be measured technically, you are correct For anyone who thinks technical prowess equates to what "sounds good" you are both correct and incorrect. That's where the subjectivity comes in. It's true of just about any medium. Art is just like that, and some people look at art and say wow, that is technically genius, I am amazed. Others can say Wow, that is technically genius, but it still doesn't move me. Yet another could say This music kicks butt but I have no idea why as I have no formal musical education or training, it just sounds good to my ear. No need to argue it, just revel in the fact that we can express our opinions freely (for the most part) and agree to disagree.

And for whomever quoted the line "Eat, drink, and be mery; for tomorrow we die," and attributed it to dmb I'd like to point you in the direction of a little known book called the Bible, that most likely got it from somewhere else too, but that is another thread for another board. Good day and enjoy whatever art turns you on, tunes you in, or drops you out. Depends on the mood, really...

I back Canis on the Steve Gadd choice.

Chuck Panazo of Styx (yes, styx) used to be an awesome drummer. But you would have to see him live to really see his talents as I feel that his performances on albums never really came through strong enough.

Ironically, what ever you think of Phil Collins as a singer, he was a pretty good drummer. I wish I could remember the other drummer he would work with though.

Don Henley is the best song writer/drummer that I know of.

But the tops on the Drums would still have to be Steve Gadd.

I am into jazz, and blues to a lesser extent, and I can certainly understand the connection the DMB has with jazz. It has jazz-like sound to it, in that it's often free-flowing.

But on another note. All I gotta say is: RUSH. Now there is a great band. 3 guys who sound like 4.

So DMB is one of the top 5 touring bands...today.
That hardly qualifies them as good.
Ii does qualify them as popular.

I'm just not in to trendy music.

I'll take Bonnie Raitt over DMB every time.

In 1994 and 1995 DMB was trendy, but that was then, this is now. Herald, you are going to have to check your age cause it has been about 7 years since DMB was trendy. They have been selling out almost every concert for 8 consecutive years. They have had a consistant level of sucess for 8 in record sales. This is not a trend band my friend. They are fast becoming as much a mainstay in music as Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and numerous other bands that have had long succesful careers.

It is good music, especially the cover of Charlie Danial's "Devil Went Down to Georgia" with Blues Traveller. This from a guy that was into metal and techno for most of his musical life.

The lyrics for Typical situation are great. I chorus most people that do not like DMB would probably agree with. Not to mention the song Rhyme and Reason.
