Other Planes and No Gods

Hey guys,

What if a group of Forgotten Realms based heroes suddenly find themselves in the world of the Scarred Lands?

What would happen to spellcasters of the divine nature or other special abilities, such as Paladinic abilities and powers that come from the followers' god?

Would the new world's gods' supply power...would there be "low level" use (say 3rd level and lower) of ambient divine power or none at all...

I don't know much about the Scared Lands, but their are a number of ways to think about this. Since primarily Clerics and Paladins would be at risk of losing spells (since Rangers and Druids come from nature), sudenly the Paladin becomes a charismatic fighter with less feats, and the cleric becomes a wise fighter with less feats and lower BAB than a fighter. Not a very fun role. (Not saying a carismatic fighter is not fun, but one without feats would be un-fun) Being without spells MIGHT be an interesting story hook...for a couple sessions.

It would be interesting to see a cleric of a FR deity searching for his place within that setting though. Could have many agents of various deities vying for the cleric or paladins aligence. Could have agents of an evil deity trying to get a fallen paladin or agents of a opposite alignemnt church going for the cleric. Could be a fun time.

What I would do (and I'm a big softy) would be to have them lose their abilities for a few days (maybe a week), but slowly get them back as the deities of the S.L. notice a new presence in their world. Maybe like the Paladins divine grace comes, and then lay on hands a couple of days later. Or a cleric gets his lower level spells. Might want to hold off on a Paladin's spells and the Cleric's highest spells and domain spells until a new-deity is found.

None of this is really based on any offical rules, just IMHO and what I would possible do.

Clerical: If they are willing to accept their situation, I'd let them try and find new Gods. But this would have to be a willing journey/adventure on their part. If they didn't want too... Well in that case they are pretty much SOL and as hammy said, clerics will loose a lot.

Arcane: I'd assume the ambient magic principle. However, FR works off of the weave. It would be reasonable to assume that high intelligence casters could figure out a way to tap the new energy sources. High charismatic casters might be able to force their "force of character" to find a new path to magic as well. Here I would suggest some research checks (or maybe just some INT or CHA checks) every day or week to see if they adjust.

I had something like this happen in an old 2E campaign. All arcane spell casters had to "relearn" magic (it was a world wide effect). I'll see if I can dig up my rules on it. ;)
