Our Space At Gencon (was: ENNIES 2004 Ceremony Planning Thread)

Well, I for one wouldn't be opposed to having Super Cool SpaceTM available for E.N. Publishing products, but I also don't want to offend anyone. In fact, I know pretty much nothing about what is going on with the layout and setup of such a booth.

Look at it this way, though. Publishers who are nominated for an ENnie would get advertising in this booth (if this booth is actually to exist; I know not if this be merely Michael's flight of fantasy), and they're not paying for the space. I think giving some space for E.N. Publishing products would be fair, as long as we don't advertise it as:

E.N. Publishing
And ENnies nominees

But again, I understand some people might see it as favoritism or ego. I'd want to hear opinions before I give my recommendation.

P.S., Michael, Arthur: You two interested in playtesting some E.N.Pub books? You do so much volunteer stuff to help out, I want to know if I can offer some early peeks.

Cthulu, one of these days you will learn that no matter how you do something, someone will complain.
Oh, I know that. It's pretty much 90% of my day at work. No need for me to learn it again.

Finally, you're overlooking a security problem. While those cabinets will be locked, I don't want to place them were no one is really watching them at least some of the time. Part of the placement of the ENPublishing space is to allow the awards cabinets to be at least partially watched during the show.
I'm not suggesting that you have 2 completely seperate booths. I'm not suggesting that you change your design at all. What I am suggesting is that if you have a booth that is 20x30 feet, and 2/3 of it is taken up by the awards cabinets and 1/3 by ENPublishing, ask for a donation of a 20x20 space and pay for the 10x20 space taken up by ENPublishing. One booth, 1/3 paid for and for profit (regardless of how small) and 2/3 donated.

If nothing else, ask Peter if they would mind if products were sold in a space donated by him. Just do it before hand. I'd really hate to see someone come by during the show and say "Hey, you can't sell products out of this booth, you didn't pay for a retail space." Thats all.

Michael-

Please don't take my comments as an attack against your design. I really just want to do what I can to show ENWorld off in the best way possible. I want the Ennies to be the highlight of GenCon. I plan on volunteering at the Ennies, and would volunteer to mind the booth as well. If you need assistance in any of the design or implementation stages, please let me know and I'll be glad to help out however I can.

Anyway, this setup calls for a 20'x30' space. While Peter Adkinson has said he'd be willing to contribute space he never said how much. 20'x30' is sizable.
I don't have the details yet, but PA is donating a *small* booth, and it isn't in the exhibit hall itself. I wouldn't start thinking of ambitious ideas yet.

Also, PA hasn't told me yet what I can and cannot use the booth for. That it's for the ENnies is understood; the rest depends on what I can arrange with him. I'm fairly confident that EN World in general and EN Publishing will be OK using the space, but it will still be pretty small.

Since Gen Con staff aren't at the stage where they plan such things yet, we won't have any answers on this until much later.

While I'm a relative unknown here, I'd like to volunteer my services in labor to the award show. If it helps I have some expertise in set construction and I've worked as a bouncer/greeter in the past.

Understood. Since much of this is still in flux I'm trying for something flexiable that can be reconfigured. Those cabinets could be placed at some of the isle junctions without breaking Indiana fire codes, and Peter may opt for that along with us getting a booth somewhere at the con.

Is it all right for me to run this design by Peter and get some feedback from him, or wait until after Gencon SoCal & Christmas??

Anyway, I'm going to concentrate on the cabinets because of their portability between designs.

I think it would be wonderful to split the set piece construction between those of us here that are capable. One element that I could use that I don't have the materials to cut (and test) is the gobo - but wait until we actually know a light will be hung (a $100 expense).

While all three cabinets should be made together so they match, the large 20'x10' self standing flat (the 1' thick black line at the bottom of the diagram) that seperates the display from the rest of the isle is something you could help with - although hold off until we know the shape of our space (The size and shape of the framing could change). Would you be interested in this?

No, your right. There is much that needs clarifying before any real progress here can be made. But I'd like to get it clarified before February so that there will be time to work on this in spare time without rushing.

i guess now isn't the time to bring up one piece ennies where a dragon is on the big d20 then?

Well you could sketch out some trophy designs. Am I correct in presuming you'll be doing next year's trophies??

Also, I heard several complaints about there not being a trophy for each participant in the award... For instance Monsternomicon had some 7 or so interior artists - but one trophy. While I'm not going to propose you do 1/trophy per person, perhaps a plaque or award certificate could be done on a person / award basis especially since I suspect we'll see a lot more shared awards this year as the ENnies are open to all RPG's.
