You've seen them recently? I saw Maiden once in 1987 (I think), and I'd love the chance to see them again live.

Yep, last month at the Northern Virginia/DC Ozzfest show. Spent most of the day watching a bunch of noise made by bands with no stage presence or charisma, that is so far from the metal I grew up listening to I can't see how it's considered the same genre. Then Maiden came on and put on an excellent, but far too short, set. I wish they would tour here more often, I never had the chance to see them in their prime, and would jump on any chance to see them now.

I saw them on their Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tour. If you can scrounge up the tape of Live After Death, the concert was a lot like that except that they changed the stage from the Egyptian theme to a weird Nirvana-like blue ocean thing they had on the cover of that album.

I think the reasaon they don't tour here anymore is because they just don't have the fan base here that they once did while their international fan base remains huge. I would assume that its very expensive to play the US.

I used to own the LAD video, but no idea what happened to it. the current stage set is based on the old sets they had for the first 4 albums (Iron Maiden through Piece of Mind) since they are promoting the new Early Years DVD. Lots of old artwork for the everchanging backdrops, devil statue during Number of the Beast, etc. They also only played songs from the first 4 albums, including Phantom of the Opera!

Yep. I read somewhere that they also don't like the fact that when they play here, most of the crowd is older and not as nthusiastic as they used to be, mostly guys in their 30s & 40s standing with their arms crossed watching, while in Europe & South America is mostly young teens and 20s going nuts. A shame really, as the older crowd are the ones who can afford to pay more for the seats and are the same guys who used to go see Maiden when they toured here in the 80s. New fans are into different stuff now in the US, while classic metal is still strong elsewhere.

In the library I work at we have one teenager who comes in and spends a good deal of his net-time looking up Iron Maiden stuff. Dunno if he just likes the art or what, but it's nice to see when everyone else is looking up hip hopcrappy pop stars.

Wicker Man, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Childhood's End, and Sign of the Cross are among the best Maiden songs recorded, IMO. I still haven't picked up Dance of Death, but it will probably be the next album I buy.

Well, the DVD is a documentary about the years around the first 4 albums, and they had a 60 minute set on Ozzfest, so they only played songs that were from the albums covered on the DVD, and they played some that they rarely play live anymore. There is supposed to be another DVD coming out sometime in the next year or two covering the middle years (Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son, etc), and I assume they will do the same again, either playing only songs from those albums, or if they play a long set, mostly songs from those albums.

Yes, but I am merely a YA librarian. I'm sure the tomes I recommend are far less eldritch than yours!
