Painting advice needed

I'm new to painting minis. Having loads of fun and starting to get ambitious...

One thing I'd like to do for one knight-in-shining-armour mini I've got is put a translucent blue over silver armour. I've tried mixing blue into silver but it doesn't really work - not that I really expected it to. I've tried a blue wash, but that tends to puddle and it's impossible to get a good even coating. I feel that the wash idea is where I need to be heading, but I just need to find the right thinning agent. Any thoughts?

Another possibility is to mix a little blue into varnish.

Thanks in advance.

what you want.. is a really really really thin coat of the wash. just dilute with water. they apply as many times as it takes to get the level you want.
