Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

Ok, I just read thru the entire thread. When I started it only had 8 pages now it has 14.

I can't describe how I'm feeling. :( My first issue of Dragon was #63 and the store still had a copy of #61 which a bought a few days later. Yeah I've got a few issues of Dragon. Dungeon I didn't get when it first came out, I don't remember my first issue. But once I did start buying it I kept buying it.

I, like a lot of you, had a subscription that lasped a few years ago but was thinking of renewing soon, oh well. I have been buying them faithfully though. It is something I looked forward twice a month. Since I left B&N it gave me an excuse to visit my friends that still work there.

A huge interest in my life will soon be no more and it's tearing me apart. It is truely a sad day. I enjoy have a magazine that I can take with me where ever I go. If I get the new WotC e-zine I'll have to pay for that and then have the expense of printing it out- paper, ink, electricity, and time. And unless I buy more expensive paper it will not have the same quality nor will it be bound unless I take it some where and spend even more money. So to all those who just say print it out... well I'll respect the Eric's Grandmother rule here.

I could go on and on but I'll just say that I'm really upset at WotC/Hasbro for their decision not to renew it.

A loud THANK YOU to the Paizo staff for making Dragon and Dungeon great magazines. And I just have to add a special Thank you to Erik for keeping Greyhawk in the magazines as long as you did. I'll look into Paizo's products more then I have done so far.

Well, folks, I've happily made myself available for all manner of questions today, but now I'm (un)dead tired. I'll be heading home now and will be back in this thread again tomorrow morning to continue the question train.

Don't get too crazy without me. :-)

Thanks for all the posts. Good luck with the new stuff -- I'm already looking forward to the first Pathfinder.

Shocked

Wow. The first day in years that I don't read the boards until nighttime and all hell breaks loose.

Damn, crap and a bunch of other words that I won't offend grandma with.
Well how do I sum it up?
1. WOTC: I will wait and see but you broke my heart doing this and stabbed me in the back with that joke called MasterTools and I am supposed to believe you can build a subscription-worthy online service when you have the worst website ever?
2. Paizo: You have my full support. Hope it is enough. My wallet is waiting to buy your stuff.
3. Is this for real?

I have Dragons since the low 40s and years worth of Dungeons. One of my favorite things is to lay back in a chair or my bed and read these. Especially Dungeon, I would play out the adventures in my mind trying to think how my players would react to the scenarios. I don't mind online content (heck I read this place 6 hours a day easy) but one of my favorite pastimes is going by the wayside.

I hope Paizo's books like my reading chair ;)

The money that show brought in wasn't worth having our sales guy out of the office for a week, basically.

Well as my wife can attest to, I sure as hell tried to buy as much as you offered. Sorry it didn't work out.

I'm home from work now.

So I can finally actually raise a glass to the end of Dragon and the birth of something new.

It's the end of an era.

The King is Dead. Long Live the King.

Good luck Erik, Josh, and everyone else. I look forward to seeing y'all at the summer Cons this year.

And now I think I'll stop posting and start getting drunk.

Edit: And of course, I just discovered that both my subs run out two issues before the end, so I have to pick up four issues on the monthly sub plan for closure

i'll drink to that.

diaglo "been at it since i got home at 4pm " Ooi

I'm curious though? WotC cut all their staff a few years ago and got rid of some great talent. I'm wondering who is going to pick up the slack??????

WoTC cut a bunch of people, but not remotely all their staff. They also hired on a bunch of folks.

Keep in mind, its seems very likely to me that the folks providing content online (which I'llbe money will be called Dungeon and Dragon) are going to be a lot of the same people providing content from Dragon and Dungeon now.

James/Erik - I'd suspect that a lot of the classic columns from Dragon (Ecology, Demonomicon, etc) will be continued online. Have you had any discussions with WoTC about possibly contributing in any way to the online offerings? My understanding from my (limited) contacts in the field is that WoTC isn't even really talking much about this to freelancers yet, so it may be too early to tell, but I'm curious.

This is my thought exactly!!!!! Wotc just wanted a way for their on-line mag to succeed and by doing that they had to chop at Paizo. Just speculation here, but I'd be money on it!

That certainly seems like a likely explanation.

I bought my first copy of Dragon (#60, April 1982) exactly a quarter-century ago, when I had first started playing D&D. I've bought every issue since, and have subscribed since I started having a "real" job in 1989.

I've subscribed to Dungeon since the start of 3E.

I'll miss them both.

Erik, James, and all the rest of you Paizonians: thank you for all the great quality work you've done on both magazines.

I'll be trying Pathfinder; not sure if it'll be what I need, but I'm going to be going through mailbox withdrawl otherwise. :D

end of an era :(

Bummer.....

Well, like a lot of folks on the board, I grew up on Dragon, and I have a lot of fond memories of reading through it. The mag was not just another fan mag, but it really seemed like part of the game itself. It very much seems like a good friend has moved away. Very sad to see it go. Very disappointing. :(

Now, I am not surprised by WotC's new direction. Hasbro is running a business, and the divisions need to make money. I think we all get that. Expanding their web to include more electronic content seems to be the current trend, on a pay as you view model (look at ESPN, half their content is pay to view). While we can bash them all we want, I can not fault them for adjusting their business model as the times change. I just wish that there was still a place for the magazines. I am interested to see what they do. I am hoping that they will continue to be taking submissions for articles, as I think this is an important avenue for new authors to get their foot in the door. We shall see how it works out.

My thanks to Joshua for answering the questions on this tread. While I am disappointed that they will not be publishing Dungeon & Dragon, I am looking forward to seeing what they are going to do with their new stuff. I am glad to see that they have made adjustments in their business strategy, and are planning on sticking around. I am very excited that they are teaming up with Necro. Hopefully that will be a good match!

Anyway, as long as the quality of content is preserved at Piazo and WotC, I can live with this new direction. We shall see how this works out.

I am trying to be cautiously optimistic about this whole thing.
