Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

Ah... so this is what a Mind Blast feels like.

I've been a loyal Dragon subscriber since issue #180. My current subscriptions to both magazines end in August, I think; possibly they end with the actual final issues. I'll have to check.

I'm going to miss 'em a great deal. The hobby just won't be the same without those big D's arriving in my mailbox each month.

Smaller companies like Necromancer, Green Ronin and Goodman live and die by the games store, no question.

Smaller but well-known.

It's the other startup companies that couldn't get on the distributor's or wholesaler's order form.

Can the "good taste police" please stop stomping on the hyperbole of people who really are genuinely upset over the loss of the publications? Surely you are big enough to simply ignore comments that rankle and chalk it up to the fact that many of us are genuinely dismayed, and maybe gone a bit OTT with ananlogies?

Wow! My wife will get a kick out of someone referring to me as the "good taste police".

I am dismayed as well, don't get me wrong, but sometimes hyperbole crosses the line and it is fair to call it out when it happens.

Anyway, we're on a forum, and it wouldn't be the first time, nor will it be the last time, that I (or anyone else) will ignore a comment that rankles.

Yep. It always has been since I have two History major brothers, a father that taught Social studies (had his PHD in West African Studies), and a mom that know a lot about Medieval Literature. Plus a 92 year old grandmother.

So trust me, I know history.

Not everyone is as sociable or gregarious as yourself. That's why FLGS are an important stable in gamers societies.

Oh, I completely agree that the FLGS is important, both to the sense of community and to the survival of niche companies ... I just wonder if its demise would truly hurt WotC as a company, in the short term or long term. Hopefully we won't learn the answer anytime soon.

Another vote for this sucks/ feel like I was kicked in the junk.

I let my Dragon subscription lapse, but I bought individual issues at my FLGS probably 6 months out of the year. With more Forgotten Realms and Eberron material lately I was actually considering starting up my Dragon subscription again.

Despite what Senior Brand Manager Guy wrote, I don't see many examples of people actually paying any meaningful sum of money for online content.

I don't want to pay money to read magazine-length articles on my computer and I don't want to pay for the privilege to use up expensive ink in my printer to be able to take articles with me to the gaming table.

Unless the Wizards content is unbelievably cheap ($1-2 a month would work) I don't see myself paying for it. It could be the highest quality stuff in the world; I just don't want it as an e-zine or whatever inane marketing-speak it's going by these days.

I'm sure Paizo will do a great job with Pathfinder, but I'm also in the camp that doesn't need huge adventure paths or yet another campaign setting.

In the immortal words of Travis of the Cosmos, Wizards can "Suck it. Suck it dry."

Great, isn't it? Instead of Wizards getting this fixed, they ignore their own boards. Well, most do, there are some pleasant exceptions.

I honestly don't know.

On one hand, most companies have gone on with having magazine support. White Wolf Studios and Palladium (AFAIK). Other companies have e-zine, like Hero Games and Steve Jackson Games.

But, I haven't been a fan of White Wolf, nor a fan of Palladium's product. I played Hero Games product a long time ago, but moved on to Mutants & Masterminds and to this day, never got around to playing GURPS.

I started my hobby on D&D. And the magazine, mainly Dragon, maintains my interests because it is there, in my face. Way before I got into the internet. I'm old-school. I'd rather play around a kitchen table or whatever with my gathered friends/gamers. I only use my computer when I can't have a session, a backup option. And to gather information, FREE information.

I knew that one day, I'll end my hobby with D&D. WotC is making that day come sooner, for me.

Hey, everyone.
Just wanted to chime in here that it certainly does feel like being kicked in the balls. Fortunately, I got my kick in the balls about 3 days ago so I'm past the anger/depression/acceptance stages and have moved on to eager anticipation to see what the future holds for Paizo Publishing.

I want to let everyone know that Paizo's new GameMastery line and the first 6 issues of Pathfinder are in the capable hands of writers James Jacobs, Nicholas Logue, Wolfgang Baur, Greg Vaughan, Richard Pett, Tim Hitchcock, Micheal Cortes, Anson Caralya, and myself (still amazed that I'm included in this list). As well as the stupendous editing skills of Erik Mona, James Jacobs and the monkeys chained to typewriters at their office in Renton, Washington.

Being somewhat on the inside track on this I can tell that this stuff will absolutely NOT SUCK. They've been listening closely to messageboard chatter, picking out writers they know can deliver the goods, and preparing to kick some serious ass for months. Again, this will ABSOLUTELY NOT SUCK!

This is an extremely disapointing day for a lot of us. I've been collecting Dragon ever since I picked up the hobby in the 80's. It's a part of the game. It's a link to a world-wide gaming community. It's full of inspiring stuff and even if a given issue kinda blew, there was usually at least really cool artwork or an evocative cover. And then Dungeon came along and was every DMs' best friend. What a great resource it's been!

But in a few months they will both be gone as we know them. Who knows? Maybe WotC's plans for the two mags will be cool. I dunno. We'll see. But I do know that what Paizo has planned is going to be awesome. I hope you all will support them and come along for the ride.
