Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

I honestly don't know.

On one hand, most companies have gone on with having magazine support. White Wolf Studios and Palladium (AFAIK). Other companies have e-zine, like Hero Games and Steve Jackson Games.

But, I haven't been a fan of White Wolf, nor a fan of Palladium's product. I played Hero Games product a long time ago, but moved on to Mutants & Masterminds and to this day, never got around to playing GURPS.

I started my hobby on D&D. And the magazine, mainly Dragon, maintains my interests because it is there, in my face. Way before I got into the internet. I'm old-school. I'd rather play around a kitchen table or whatever with my gathered friends/gamers. I only use my computer when I can't have a session, a backup option. And to gather information, FREE information.

I knew that one day, I'll end my hobby with D&D. WotC is making that day come sooner, for me.

I was referring to the demise of specialised hobby game stores, not the magazines. If this new online endeavour doesn't deliver the goods, it will only harm the brand. But if it works? Hard to say.

Like I said in the other main complaint thread, I'd pay $10/issue for a good physical magazine before shelling out a $1/issue for an e-zine with the same content.

To me, the medium of a magazine is just as important as its content- there are simply too many problems with online publishing for me to even THINK about enjoying an e-zine.

As I stated in an earlier post, last year two of my FLGS no longer carried new Dragon or Dungeon magazines. They told me their established longtime local distributor (Comics Hawaii) are not ordering for them. They had to scramble to find another distributor, looked far as mainland US.

But did it slowed them down? Nah. Not when TCG is still going strong. Give gratitude to WotC for inventing that new hobby.

The only d20 items that I purchase these days are Dungeon and Dragon magazines. Nostalgia from my younger years or maybe simple habit... I dunno. Bummer, they came in handy for my Hero System games and gave me a ton of ideas. They were good for plain ole comfort reading. I doubt that I'll be picking up the new stuff but I do want to take a moment to say thanks to all the Piazo folks who rose to the challenge -- year after year -- of putting out and improving the best magazine around.

Thanks.

After wading through the slew of posts, I think I'll just throw one comment out there about the only issue (sorry for the pun) that I have with e-zines.

First, in an effort of full disclosure here, I do have a Pyramid subscription, which I've had off and on for about a decade-ish, since they moved it from print to e-zine. If I can't afford to renew, then I wait until I can - in fact, I renewed recently, as I'd like to work on some submission ideas for 4th Ed. GURPS stuff.

Anyhow, my biggest problem with the e-zine format is that generally when your subscription expires, so does your access to all that you've purchased.

With a hard print magazine, the subscription expires, but I've still got my books/materials.

But, from the other side of it, with e-zines you generally are given access with your subscription to ALL of their issue, so it's an advantage and disadvantage all rolled into one. ;)

One of my desires, like others have said on here, was to be published in Dragon or Dungeon, even though I'd been published, it always felt like it'd be my "I made it moment".

Sure, that's selfish, but that's one of the first thoughts that hit me.

Another thought, too, which I got from Monte Cook, via OYT , was how a lot of those ads from Dragon will no longer have a venue.

Not just the regular gaming products, mind you, but also the quirky ones, too. Heck, Wolfgang Baur's Open Design project has even had an ad or two in those magazines.

Anyhow, it's a sad day, I think, and it's my hope that if WotC is replacing Dragon and Dugeon in print with some electronic magazine, that it's at least also called Dragon and Dungeon.

Heck, they could take a queue from SJ games and have a fully accessible archive of all their issues, I know that'd make a portion ofus all pretty happy.

AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

First they canceled E-Tools and now DUNGEON and DRAGON!!!

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

Good luck to Paizo, who are doing a fantastic job on Dungeon. It really was the best value in gaming.

Pathfinder looks swell (WAR art makes me fail my save!) even though I don't prefer adventure paths. I will check this out, nonetheless. The Gamemastery modules look really promising. The joint venture with the Necro guys will probably yield some really fantastic products. (please do consider using their and others 3rd party content in your newer products.) Paizo is only going up, really.

I don't have any faith in the WotC digital initiative. Given the problems with their own site, how could I? It's going to have to be 1.) cheap, 2.) well produced, and 3.) not just the same material that used to be free. We'll see what happens...
