Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

I imagine the WotC site would get a lot more traffic than EN World so I would have expected their thread to be much bigger.
Last time I looked at the numbers, the Wizzos forums got about half the traffic of ENWorld.

Hmmm . . . now that makes me really wonder if moving to an e-zine format is wise . . . ?

A couple of days to digest the news, and I'm really surprised how disappointed I am that Dragon won't be around anymore. It's not like I'll miss the content of either rag - I stopped reading Dungeon when Polyhedron was axed and I gave up on Dragon (and 3e, for the most part) when 3.5 was released.

But as others have said already, Dragon has always been an intergral part of being a gamer, and even if it didn't speak to me anymore in its current iteration, I enjoyed the nostalgia hit of seeing it on the shelf at the hobby shop.

Which reminds me . . . I wonder how retailers feel about the change?

Out of curiosity, did you expect this announcement to stir up this much animosity?

Yes.

Is it just me, or does this seem particularly telling re: who the ultimate decision maker in the process was (WotC or Paizo)?

In any event, this just goes more to the point of what some of us have been saying about the way it's all being handled by both parties. If the people at Paizo (or even just Erik) foresaw the potential outcry from this, and they were prepared to begin rolling out information on their new initiative and have a visible presence to alleviate fears, then how can it not be just a poor PR/Marketing decision on the behalf of WotC not to have done the same?

But you have no idea what the new cola will taste like. It's not tab. It's something never seen before. It could be way better than all Cokes that came before.

It's not something never seen before. Per WotC's description it's "the same great content we've come to expect from Dungeon and Dragon" only as an online resource rather than as a print product.

I've experienced Dungeon and Dragon. I've experienced "online resources" from WotC. I loath the idea of the two combined.

I think I've got a pretty good idea about how this new model is going to "taste".

I say again, no amount of PR would help with people calling Wotc "stupid" and staff that worked for decades on the very magazines that were cancelled "traitors".

Gonna have to disagree with you here, Vigilance. I think that if there had been a proper presence to communicate with the fanbase, and if WotC had had something, anything to roll out and say "here's something to look forward to", that a lot of the people here would at least be stepping back and toning down the angst- I know I would.

I think a lot of the vitriol and general upset feelings are simply being boosted by the fact that we're all coming together in common complaint and have no outlet for which to alleviate our collective unrest. Sure- there will always be backlash, and there will always be negativity towards announcements like this, but it can be minimized or lessened by proper publicity.

It's the old- throw a starving dog a bone so he's got something to chew on analogy.

How much did the ongoing 3.0 previews from the staff at WotC do to engender goodwill among the community back in the day? You'd think they would have learned from that- although I suppose the majority of the people who were there at the time are no longer, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I think you need to go read the sticky thread. It addresses just why Wizards people are not participating and being silent.

Just did, actually, after I posted. Not that it really changes my feelings on the way things have been handled, but I'm hopeful that we'll start hearing some things. As I said, that's all I've been really wondering about myself. :)

I think most people are forgetting is that most gamers do not go online for D&D information, news, or anything PnP gaming.

But most gamers don't read gaming magazines either. So either way, it's a product aimed at the hardcore audience.

I still think digital will have more reach than print, if nothing else then in foreign countries.

Good, I just wanted to point it out as many people around here I know don't really read the sticky threads.
