D&D 5E Paladin Predictions

Book-Friend, he/him
So, gonna get some Paladin stuff next week, more than likely. What are folks expecting to see, any ideas based on past edition kita or prestige classes?

I can see maybe a "witch hunter" Paladin that has some more mage like spell capabilities, like the Arcana Cleric.

I recall there was some group in the 3E FRCS that were Egyptian god worshipping "died and came back" paladins. Some potential there for non-evil, shadowy "Oarh of the Risen" or something.

Could be the mystic.

Assuming it is the paladin, some kind of oath of ancestors could be interesting, as would a grail knight (oath of stewardship) type of paladin that watches over or searches for some item (doesn't mean that the paladin will be able to use the item at low levels). Kind of a long shot, but I was impressed by the Derro Shadow Antipaladin from the Tome of Beasts, so maybe another evil paladin, but more madness focused then undead focused.

Tanking and healing paladins are the most likely. I like the idea of a warding/ guardian paladin. (I wrote one up myself for a DMs Guild product).
One focused around killing undead also seems likely. Maybe one with offensive auras.

Knight or cavalier from fighter would be a darn good crossover.

The whole subclass thing is a bit of a shame in that they aren't universal. I wish they were designed to fit across every class, but oh well.

I'd like to see some kind of hellsguard paladin - like a sentinel assigned to keep the demons and devils at bay.

I hope if they make an evil-themed blackguard type, they actually just make it about being a true exemplar of darkness. They've given blurbs warning DMs about the monster races in volo's being unbalanced, I can think of no reason why the same couldn't be done here on the subject of theme/party cohesion. What I'm getting at is I'm tired of them giving us "evil, but not" options. Calling it an umbral paladin or something and then having all of its abilities be themed around shadows/death, but still implying it's a good-guy option is insulting, to me at least, and seems like it increases the chances of not satisfying people who want a blackguard. One of which is me, I would like to see a blackguard show up in this UA.

I'm hoping we avoid the -slayer bunch, as they usually are either too niche to reasonably pick outside of specific campaigns, or their bonuses are so broad (dragonslayer getting a buff against large or larger opponents, for example) that they really don't fit the theme at all.

I'd really like a paladin that's about ranged combat. Not much else to say here, smiting arrows are cool.

I'd strongly suspect there will be an avenger-themed light armor variant, that seemed to be a reasonably popular 4e option and it wouldn't be hard at all to bring back, which is a win-win in my book.

I would expect Undead Hunter (that seems to be a theme of these new subclasses) and Inquisitor (aka Witch Hunter). Those are both pretty safe bets for past-edition kits. I wouldn't mind something more out there though; I could see a ranged archetype or a more political-focused type.
