Paladin Profession

Charity work, youve got that charisma stat for more than leaning on a wall and looking pretty, get people motivated to better their communities, start workshops, build defences, churches and orphanages.
Great suggestions there. The pagan thing doesn't play too well in this setting, because there's already a crusade of a global kind going on, and for other reasons i can't get involved right now.

but i like the using the CHA to motivate the community.. excellent, thanks

"Under conditions of peace, the warlike man attacks himself" -- Nietzsche

Now some have interpreted this in the literal manner, to suggest that a warlike man will self-destruct when there are no wars to fight. This is, of course, silly. Much of Nietzsche's work, like that of most great philosophers, was written with many possible interpretations in mind, and to latch on to the literal one betrays a lack of consideration.

No, the way to interpret this is in the metaphorical or figurative manner, to ask what it is the words might _stand for_, not what they literally mean. And in this case, just a few minutes' reflection will reveal the true meaning of the phrase given above. War, of course, is a violent state of being. Violence is abuse, and a warlike man is one who engages in abuse. And when there is noone else to abuse, a warlike man must engage in self-abuse. If you know what I mean, and I think you do.

I hope the way forward is now clear. There can only be one course of action for your paladin to take for the next five years. Good luck, and godspeed.

If your monarch is lawful good, might I suggest the King's Guard? It isn't usually dangerous, pays well, and allows you to serve your country.

Judge - The paladin travels from town to town hearing cases and ruling on them. This performs allows the paladin to build up a database of the area and NPCs and good-will with the locals as he interacts with them.

Tour Guide - The paladin has to lead pilgrams (sp?) to holy sites. This could be young clerics, monks, paladins, nobles. It shows the knowledge that the paladin has for the saints and his gods.

I find it quite a good thing for your Paladin, but if you are a true Paladin, you'll earn no gold during that time.

Actually, I believe he must try to earn a wage during that time. He stated that he has borrowed money from another, it is only right that he make every effort to repay the debt.

I think that acting as an instructor would be a good idea as well. Other options would include undertaking missions for the church or attempting to recover church property.

It would help quite a bit if we had a copy of the characters skill list and a little more background. Most characters have something other than adventuring that they are good at, where did he spend his skill points?

Instructor. Like Indiana Jones, all the female students would keep trying to send him love notes.

Or he could meditate for celestial enlightenment.

The PCs in my Britannia 3E game have been doing a lot of meditating. Refreshes the mind for the serious business of killing monsters and taking their stuff. :)

Have some *evil* wizard lay a geas on you to act all un-paladin-like with orgies, mindless drinking, etc. Then get an atonement after five years. :p

Seriously, starting a family and becoming the lord of some minor land would imo be a paladinic thing to do. Training young paladins-to-be and helping everyone within his land would further fill his task planner with honest, simple and holy work. Plus it gives you a base of operations as well as many nice plot hooks. Be sure to take leadership at the next opportunity, if you haven't already. Regarding the warlike nature impeding such a quiet life - for a warlike paladin, who has nothing to fight at the moment, jousting with other honorable knights would seem a good past time. This on the other hand gives ample opportunity to meet the lady, which could change his nature or at least direct it into more constructive (literally :p) deeds until his strength of arms is once again needed.

I was going to say a pilgrimage, but Hong has sold me on self-abuse:

And when there is noone else to abuse, a warlike man must engage in self-abuse.

I know, I know, we are not supposed to encourage him.

I have a 9th level human Paladin. . . So other than military service, does anyone have any "peace time" suggestions for a paladin, to earn gold?

1] Start a family. [I agree with the lord of the manor thing]
2] upgrade the training of the local militia
3] breed and train a new warhorse [that should keep you busy for 4 years or so]
4] construct a keep - most took years to build
5] take up falconry and hunting
