Well, I have to admit it started as a joke as the king wanted a celebration for that paladin (PR orientated king!), the player said:"I'll tell my squire he should tell the king I'm off to a monastery in the mountains for atonement..."

As the first noblewomen in the midfifties started to send flowers to the new hero, he decided to pack his horse.

Blackguards look good on paper but actually suck for players.

You need to plan for it (5 ranks in hide!) or multi to rogue if you were a Paladin. I hate losing BAB... same thing with Fighter/Clerics.

Plan to fall from grace, woh that is strange.

"I'm gonna play a Paladin for 10 levels (1 year) and enjoy this Paladin, then, wait for it, I am going to fall from grace. I have planned for this with crossclass ranks and feats. My character is now totally different and please Mr DM, can you tell everyone to roll up new characters so they don't kill me? Pleeeeease..."

DM's can fiddle their npcs as they wish, so Blackguards are a lot more viable. Guess that's why they are in the DMG.
