Paladins

I like Paladins a lot.

I hate the idea of 8 other core classes based on the Paladin but having differing alignment.

For all that is holy, rename them (do NOT put an "anti" in front of it) and make them each totally different if you must.

I do wonder about several mechanics however:
- smite once per day?
should progress with levels
- remove disease *x?
rather specific power often unused
- hardwired called warhorse when this looks like a cohort issue
not really too much the issue as called mounts rock but more choice = fun
- spells, the lack of bulls strength and endurance
warrior spells extraodinaire, also low level so will actually become available. Core 2nd lvl choice = the pits

Despite my moan I am only thinking of swapping in/out some select spells.

There certainly is a place for unholy warriors. Not Fighter/Clerics either, "pure" fighting types with good bab/hd, etc.

The Blackguard is okay as a prestige class but being a prestige class it is more the higher champion. I guess the unholy warrior could just be a description but it is always nice to back it up with a mechanic.

Wanna see something a bit insane?

Just a few comments:

A couple of you are quite right in wanting to modify the PHB Paladin:
--- Cleric/Fighter is more effective in almost all aspects.
--- They should get more smites per day.
-- They should have a spell list closer to the Holy Liberator (add the obvious ones)
--- There is already a CG Paladin (Holy Crusader) and a NG Paladin (Soldier of Light in MotP, I think)

What do you think about the Blackguard, BTW? Better balanced, equal, worse...?

Better.

My favorite paladin story (except for the Lady Despina successors) is this:

Little war in little country. Small army of defenders, large armies of orcs. Every human desperately awaits the arrival of an allied army but noone has heard anything about them (They didn't come actually).

Paladin finds a medium sized group of orcs just setting camp. He rides into it at full charge, stops and opens his visor in front of the chiefs camp and asks him politely for the way to his army (the one supposed to come to help) cause it should be around here.

The orcs chieftain thinks for one second ("Paladins.... don't ... lie...!") and orders immediate retreat.

The paladin atoned for three months in a monastery in the mountains :D

Attoning in a monestary for three months 'cause of lying to a warband of orcs is one of those wink, wink, nudge things. The Paladin has to go sit under a waterfall and think on his 'transgression', but 'defeating' a larger force like that, alone and with no injuries deserves to have the glory, and the praise that will get tossed his way. But , I'm also of the opinion that somepeople expect a paladin to charge in and get killed for stupid reasons. They seem to expect a trained warrior to act like a movie stereotype.
