That's how I view the Paladin class - it's like a prestige class that you can take at first level. But like all prestige classes, it has a specific requirement (the LG alignment).

I don't agree that Paladins could or should be any other alignment other than Lawful Good.

I think I remember seeing a Paladin variant that could be used to make paladins of any alignment somewhere.

I'm enjoying a variant in my world where I've decided to base Paladins more off Knights Templar than Grail Knights. The most enjoyable thing I've done on this basis is making it so that the only people who are "called" to be Paladins are gay men. It adds a new dimension to the well-coifed yet deadly creatures that Paladins are.

There are already some of these:
Blackguard.
Holy Liberator.
Fist of Gruumsh.
etc.

And that's pretty cool.
Indeed, it is. What else have we got?

Rethgif
Darb
Cirelc
Rorecros
Draziw
Diurd
Eugor
Regnar (only one letter from the name of a certain iconic. Co-in-key-dink, or conspiracy?)
...and that's not even covering the specialists.

Twould be vaguely amusing to run "Eugor the Rogue" and see how long it took for the other players to notice the name's origin...

Noisp
Roirraw Cihcysp

And prestige classes:
Nissassa (a good name for a female assassin, no? :D)
Retsamerol
Recnadwodahs
