Parry: The Art of Defence

And are you sure you get the same numbers using Expertise?....

Approximately. Since you don't give exact details for the characters fighting skills and AC, and the exact parrying rules, I can't be certain.

As for context, that is important. Neglecting to mention important details of your house rules makes it pointless to discuss them.

Sorry, I really should have put the house rules earlier.

The reason I didn't is that, while designed for that specific system, they still work in any d20 game, and I didn't want to push a negative bias on readers (though it appears some people still have one . . .;) )

If your game is going to be /that/ brutal, I wouldn't suggest using a parrying system like the one I posted - which is really just designed to give a somewhat detailed offense-for-defense trade-off in an otherwise unchanged 3E system - but one more like GURPs where parries and dodges are taken care of by rolls made by the defending player, almost like saving throws, since each such roll is likely to be a live-or-die situation.

Actually, I playtested the system on Labor Day, and it seemed to work pretty well...

Despite the fact that not a single parry was made. All the attacks were either blaster fire or natural weapons, and Corlon stole the metacop's pulse rifle and fried him with it before he could whip out the beam sword. Oh well.

Despite this, no one died, which I am quite happy of. the sytem isn't really *that* brutal, just more life-like, and promotory of fighiting only when you know that you can win.

Playtesting the pulse rifles was fun though. :D

Yep! it was attatched to the wrist of the battle armor, search check DC 25 to find the thing that ejected the beam limiter rod.

This coming from someone who didn't bother engaging in discussion to help you refine your ideas, but just said variations on "why bother changing things"!!!!

I'm glad that your trial worked well.

What is labour day? Assuming it's not a celebration of maternity wards, is it what has kept the messageboards quiet the last couple of days?

There is...another...sky...walk..errrrrr

There may be a way to balance out Jeph's Parry System (which I really like, cause I frankly find current combat bland and boring as piss). Maybe we could works sundering damage in there, for instance, Krog the Midget Orc swings his Orc Double axe at Serina the Hapless Hooker, she parrys the blow w/ her Longsword, Grog would roll damage as he normaly would (improved sunder wouldnt work in this situation cause he isnt activly trying to strike her weapon) and if the damage is enough to break her sword, well she's SOL. Thoughts? Other options?

Corlon, he lives in the UK. That should be pretty obvious, as the location under "author" sais, UK. Duh.

Labor day (sorry, I spelled it wrong the first time) is an american holiday where people don't work for a day. Or at least, they're not *officially* supposed to, but that doesn't stop them.

I can't remember if I posted that if the weapon succesfully parries, the owner must make a reflex save (DC = opponent's atk roll) or take the damage. That's how I have it in the hard coppy.

And, how bout this?

Bows and Crossbows (and other stuff like that) can only be parried with shields, and at a -2 penlty. Guns, -5. Blasters, -8.
